“I can distinctly remember getting a phone call from a writer who had sent me their spec script and wanted notes,” Mandel says. “And the fact that they were calling at 8:10 on a Thursday night while The Simpsons was on—I never looked at that writer the same way again. Honestly, I hate to say it, I dismissed them out of hand.”
