“You could just fall in love with me, then.” He leaned closer. “Problem solved.”
“You first.” I huffed and moved away, pain seared through my chest—stomping out the warmth that had been so alive a moment before.”
    J. Rose Black, Chasing Headlines

“Charlie said your friend’s disappeared,” chirped Wendy.
“No, he hasn’t.” Adam denied it. “He’s in the house. Now, look, what’s all this you’ve been telling them?”
“Nothing, I haven’t told them anything.” Charlie looked drunk.
“He said you’ve turned your friend into a crayfish,” insisted Wendy.
“He’s always making little jokes like that, and you fell for it. How am I supposed to do that, for heaven’s sake?” Adam was angry.
“With your little book you found. What’s that under your arm?”
Max Nowaz, Get Rich or Get Lucky

“Succeeding in life is about having that onetime urgency to go for it.”
    Vernon Davis

    K. Ritz
“Snake Street is an area I should avoid. Yet that night I was drawn there as surely as if I had an appointment.
The Snake House is shabby on the outside to hide the wealth within. Everyone knows of the wealth, but facades, like the park’s wall, must be maintained. A lantern hung from the porch eaves. A sign, written in Utte, read ‘Kinship of the Serpent’. I stared at that sign, at that porch, at the door with its twisted handle, and wondered what the people inside would do if I entered. Would they remember me? Greet me as Kin? Or drive me out and curse me for faking my death?  Worse, would they expect me to redon the life I’ve shed? Staring at that sign, I pissed in the street like the Mearan savage I’ve become.
As I started to leave, I saw a woman sitting in the gutter. Her lamp attracted me. A memsa’s lamp, three tiny flames to signify the Holy Trinity of Faith, Purity, and Knowledge.  The woman wasn’t a memsa. Her young face was bruised and a gash on her throat had bloodied her clothing. Had she not been calmly assessing me, I would have believed the wound to be mortal. I offered her a copper.
She refused, “I take naught for naught,” and began to remove trinkets from a cloth bag, displaying them for sale.
Her Utte accent had been enough to earn my coin. But to assuage her pride I commented on each of her worthless treasures, fighting the urge to speak Utte. (I spoke Universal with the accent of an upper class Mearan though I wondered if she had seen me wetting the cobblestones like a shameless commoner.) After she had arranged her wares, she looked up at me. “What do you desire, O Noble Born?”
I laughed, certain now that she had seen my act in front of the Snake House and, letting my accent match the coarseness of my dress, I again offered the copper.
“Nay, Noble One. You must choose.” She lifted a strand of red beads. “These to adorn your lady’s bosom?”
I shook my head. I wanted her lamp. But to steal the light from this woman ... I couldn’t ask for it. She reached into her bag once more and withdrew a book, leather-bound, the pages gilded on the edges. “Be this worthy of desire, Noble Born?”
I stood stunned a moment, then touched the crescent stamped into the leather and asked if she’d stolen the book. She denied it. I’ve had the Training; she spoke truth. Yet how could she have come by a book bearing the Royal Seal of the Haesyl Line? I opened it. The pages were blank.
“Take it,” she urged. “Record your deeds for study. Lo, the steps of your life mark the journey of your soul.”
I told her I couldn’t afford the book, but she smiled as if poverty were a blessing and said, “The price be one copper. Tis a wee price for salvation, Noble One.”
So I bought this journal. I hide it under my mattress. When I lie awake at night, I feel the journal beneath my back and think of the woman who sold it to me. Damn her. She plagues my soul. I promised to return the next night, but I didn’t. I promised to record my deeds. But I can’t. The price is too high.”
    K. Ritz, Sheever's Journal, Diary of a Poison Master

    Ellen J. Lewinberg
“Joey began to look through Mr. Emoto’s big book. The photographs were amazing. He could hardly believe the pictures were of water. Under each picture, it said the name on the label for each bottle of water. It was just like Water had told him. Joey was so excited. The pictures showed the frozen water was just a blob for the mean words. And the frozen water with words like love and joy was so beautiful.”
Ellen J. Lewinberg, Joey and His Friend Water

“We need to embrace deliverance in the body of Christ so that God’s people can receive their full inheritance and be free from the chains of the devil.”
Kathryn Krick, Unlock Your Deliverance: Keys to Freedom From Demonic Oppression

“Serving” is assisting your fellow man, the how-to, practical way to thrust your life into the spiritual wall to make the
tunnel bigger. Will God suddenly appear? Does
washing stacks of pots and pans bring salvation?
Can pulling weeds reclaim your brain? Will mopping the floor make you equal to the richest of men?”
    Tom Hillman, Digging for God

  • #8
    Robert Fulghum
“But it does no good--solves nothing--to distance myself from the front lines of human need by using the mail as a safe shelter. I believe that serving the best ends of humanity means getting out in the middle of it just as it is, not staying home writing checks and thinking hopeful thoughts. The world does not need tourists who ride by in a bus clucking their tongues. The world as it is needs those who will love it enough to change it, with what they have, where they are. And you're damned right that's idealistic. No apology. When idealism goes into the trash as junk mail, we're finished.”
Robert Fulghum, Uh-Oh: Some Observations from Both Sides of the Refrigerator Door

  • #9
    Emily Brontë
“The wind I hear it sighing, with autumn's saddest sound; withered leaves all thick are lying, as spring-flowers on the ground. This dark night has won me to wander far away; old feelings gather fast upon me.”
Emily Brontë, The Complete Poems of Emily Bronte Volume 1

  • #10
    Robert Graves
“All sorts of explanations were given for the ravages of Porphyrios (the whale). The Orthodox held that he was sent as a punishment for the sin of Monophysitism, but the Monophysites said that this could not be so as he struck at Orthodox and Monophysites alike...Bishops of both opinions had been sent to preach to him from the shore and texts floated down the current to him, written on strips of paper - conjuring him in the name of the Trinity to return to the ocean from whence he came. But Porphyrios was unlettered and unbaptised, and paid no attention.”
    Robert Graves, Count Belisarius

    Lemony Snicket
“Perhaps if we saw what was ahead of us, and glimpsed the follies, and misfortunes that would befall us later on, we would all stay in our mother's wombs, and then there would be nobody in the world but a great number of very fat, very irritated women.”
    Lemony Snicket

    Michael G. Kramer
“The Minister of Army answered, “Bob, I thought that you would have been an astute and clever enough a politician to think of this yourself, but seeing how you have asked me, I suggest that you wait until eight in the night on Thursday 29/April/1965 to announce that Australia will send the First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment to fight in South Vietnam. By you waiting until the evening of 29/April/1965 to announce this in Parliament, the labour opposition leader of Arthur Caldwell and his deputy leader of Gough Whitlam should be absent, as will be most of the entire parliament, because the following day is the beginning of a long week-
end. You are legally not required to give advanced warning to the house, so you can easily get away with this!”
Michael G. Kramer, A Gracious Enemy & After the War Volume One

  • #15
    Max Nowaz
“If you always try to subjugate people by coercion, because you are strong, then sooner or later you will run into somebody who is just as strong, if not stronger. Then you'll be in trouble.”
    Max Nowaz, The Polymorph

  • #16
    Susan Rowland
“Unbelievable and true. Anna Solokov is neither a frightened girl nor a criminal spider in the center of a huge web of drugs and god knows. No, that dangerous young woman could easily do both at different times, and to different people. No doubt that is part of George’s attraction to her. She is victim. Yet when necessary, or when it suits her, she is victimizer. Does he imagine he is battling for her soul?”
Susan Rowland, Murder on Family Grounds

“The people of Light are always stronger than the people of Evil, for they have already conquered it in themselves. They have conquered the weaknesses that still entrap others.”
”
    Alexander Morpheigh, The Pythagorean

    Jeff Johns
“Life has no obligation to make sense, and the beauty of it is that it rarely does, but if you can get lost in the sweet spot in between, you may find some answers, too - or at least create some good stories.”
Jeff Johns, Jet Lag Junkie: Unfiltered Tales of a Compulsive Wanderer

    K. Ritz
“I don’t want to believe it. I try not to. Yet tonight as I pen these words, I know Pheto is as real as my hands.

  • #24
    Katherine Parker
“Fortunately, just as we can choose to change the television or radio channel, we have the power to choose the nature of the vibrational information we are both receiving and transmitting. Rather than getting caught up in the story of our thoughts and feelings, our personal drama, we can begin to see our inner experience as energy and vibration that can readily be transformed.”
Katherine Parker, Resonance Alchemy: Awakening the Tree of Life

    David McCullough
“To the British and those Loyalists who had taken refuge in Boston, they were simply “the rebels,” or “the country people,” undeserving the words “American” or “army.” General John Burgoyne disdainfully dubbed them “a preposterous parade,” a “rabble in arms.”
    David McCullough, 1776

    Khaled Hosseini
“Some days, I listen to that clock ticking in the hallway. Then I think of all the ticks, all the minutes, all the hours and days and weeks and months and years waiting for me. All of it without you. And I can’t breathe then, like someone’s stepping on my heart. I get so weak. So weak I just want to collapse somewhere.”
    Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner

  • #30
    Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
“The book depicts thoughts, unveils imaginings, answers unspoken questions, clarifies doubts, resolves arguments, and finally reveals the very atoms of the most curiosity-driven desire.”
    Cervantes Saavedra
