تفعل الأشياء لتصل إلى نتيجة ما فتكتشف فجأة أنك وصلت إلى عكسها. "تماما كما يحصل في بلدان العجائب التي زارتها الفتاة أليس في رواية لويس كارول". بلد العجائب هو العالم الموجود في "الجانب الآخر من المرآة". عالم تزوره صباح كل يوم وأنت تنظف أسنانك بأفضل فرشاة. تنظف أسنانك بيدك اليمنى، أما في المرآة، فإن اليد اليسرى هي التي تنظف. الأثر على المرآة معاكس تماما لما تفعله... علما أنك لم تشك لحظة في إنك تنظف أسنانك بيدك اليمنى.. أنت لم تشك لحظة في يدك اليمنى كما لم تشك في الفرشاة التي تنظف الأسنان، ولا في المرآة التي تعكس ما تفعله. تذكرت كل الأشياء دون استثناء، ونسيت -أو تناسيت- أنك أمام مرآة تعكس فعلا كل شيء تقوم به.”
