“Ο ΧΡΟΝΟΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΜΝΗΜΗ" εξηγούσε ένα μεσημέρι ο Καμύ στην Αριάδνη. Καθισμένος στη ράχη ενός βράχου, όργωνε με τις πατούσες του τη θάλασσα και πιπίλιζε την καταφαγωμένη καρδιά ενός πράσινου μήλου. Ο ήλιος είχε περάσει ένα μπρούντζινο λούστρο στο σώμα του , προσδίδοντάς του μια εφηβική λάμψη.
"Τι εννοείτε ο χρόνος είναι μνήμη;" τον ρώτησε εκείνη καθώς τσαλαβουτούσε στα ρηχά. Είχε ζηλέψει το μαύρισμά του και ενστικτωδώς ανέβασε το ψάθινο καπέλο της, απαιτώντας απο τον ήλιο την ίδια τουλάχιστον αβρότητα.
"Σκέψου, μικρή μου Αριάδνη,κανείς δε θα σε ρωτήσει ποτέ τι έφαγες, αλλά θα σε ρωτήσει τι έφαγες χτες ή προχτές. Δεν έχει νόημα να επικαλεστείς κάποια ανάμνηση έξω απο το χρόνο, γιατί δεν υπάρχει. Όταν απαντάς σε μια τέτοια ερώτηση,μάλιστα, δίνεις συχνά και άλλες εξηγήσεις, αφού δεν αρκεί να λες οτι έφαγες απλά ένα φαγητό. Εξηγείς που έφαγες, με ποιον ήσουν παρέα, τι έκανες μετά το γεύμα και ούτω καθεξής. Καταλαβαίνεις οτι η μνήμη σου ξετυλίγει το κουβάρι του χρόνου. Οι άνθρωποι θυμούνται το χρόνο κι ίσως ο χρόνος δεν είναι παρά μια παρενέργεια της μνήμης.
