“The reason why many are still troubled, still seeking, still making little forward progress is because they haven't yet come to the end of themselves. We're still trying to give orders, and interfering with God's work within us. ”
    A. W. Tozer

“I can safely say, on the authority of all that is revealed in the Word of God, that any man or woman on this earth who is bored and turned off by worship is not ready for heaven.”
    A.W. Tozer

“I want the presence of God Himself, or I don't want anything at all to do with religion... I want all that God has or I don't want any.”

“Sometimes I go to God and say, "God, if Thou dost never answer another prayer while I live on this earth, I will still worship Thee as long as I live and in the ages to come for what Thou hast done already. God’s already put me so far in debt that if I were to live one million millenniums I couldn’t pay Him for what He’s done for me.”

“One hundred religious persons knit into a unity by careful organization do not constitute a church any more than eleven dead men make a football team.”

“Let every man abide in the calling wherein he is called and his work will be as sacred as the work of the ministry. It is not what a man does that determines whether his work is sacred or secular, it is why he does it.”

“Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me.”
    St. Ignatius of Loyola

    Brother Lawrence
“The difficulties of life do not have to be unbearable. It is the way we look at them - through faith or unbelief - that makes them seem so. We must be convinced that our Father is full of love for us and that He only permits trials to come our way for our own good.

Let us occupy ourselves entirely in knowing God. The more we know Him, the more we will desire to know Him. As love increases with knowledge, the more we know God, the more we will truly love Him. We will learn to love Him equally in times of distress or in times of great joy.”
Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

“Let us think often that our only business in this life is to please God. Perhaps all besides is but folly and vanity. ”
    Brother Lawrence

“I cannot imagine how religious persons can live satisfied without the practice of the presence of GOD. For my part I keep myself retired with Him in the depth of centre of my soul as much as I can; and while I am so with Him I fear nothing; but the least turning from Him is insupportable.”
Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

    Brother Lawrence
“I regard myself as the most wretched of all men, stinking and covered with sores, and as one who has committed all sorts of crimes against his King. Overcome by remorse, I confess all my wickedness to Him, ask His pardon and abandon myself entirely to Him to do with as He will. But this King, filled with goodness and mercy, far from chastising me, lovingly embraces me, makes me eat at His table, serves me with His own hands, gives me the keys of His treasures and treats me as His favorite. He talks with me and is delighted with me in a thousand and one ways; He forgives me and relieves me of my principle bad habits without talking about them; I beg Him to make me according to His heart and always the more weak and despicable I see myself to be, the more beloved I am of God.”
Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

“Do not be discouraged by the resistance you will encounter from your human nature; you must go against your human inclinations. Often, in the beginning, you will think that you are wasting time, but you must go on, be determined and persevere in it until death, despite all the difficulties.”
Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

“If not to God, you will surrender to the opinions or expectations of others, to money, to resentment, to fear, or to your own pride, lusts, or ego. You were designed to worship God and if you fail to worship Him, you will create other things (idols) to give your life to. You are free to choose, what you surrender to but you are not free from the consequence of that choice.”
Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here for?

    Juan de la Cruz
“If a man wishes to be sure of the road he’s traveling on, then he must close his syes and travel in the dark.”
    St. John of the Cross

  • #27
    Juan de la Cruz
    “I came into the unknown
    and stayed there unknowing
    rising beyond all science.

I did not know the door
but when I found the way,
    unknowing where I was,
    I learned enormous things,
but what I felt I cannot say,
    for I remained unknowing,
    rising beyond all science.

    It was the perfect realm
    of holiness and peace.
    In deepest solitude
    I found the narrow way:
    a secret giving such release
that I was stunned and stammering,
    rising beyond all science.

    I was so far inside,
    so dazed and far away
    my senses were released
    from feelings of my own.
My mind had found a surer way:
    a knowledge of unknowing,
    rising beyond all science.

    And he who does arrive
    collapses as in sleep,
    for all he knew before
    now seems a lowly thing,
and so his knowledge grows so deep
    that he remains unknowing,
    rising beyond all science.

    The higher he ascends
    the darker is the wood;
    it is the shadowy cloud
    that clarified the night,
and so the one who understood
    remains always unknowing,
    rising beyond all science.

    This knowledge by unknowing
    is such a soaring force
    that scholars argue long
    but never leave the ground.
Their knowledge always fails the source:
    to understand unknowing,
    rising beyond all science.

    This knowledge is supreme
    crossing a blazing height;
    though formal reason tries
    it crumbles in the dark,
but one who would control the night
    by knowledge of unknowing
    will rise beyond all science.

And if you wish to hear:
    the highest science leads
    to an ecstatic feeling
    of the most holy Being;
and from his mercy comes his deed:
    to let us stay unknowing,
    rising beyond all science.”
    St. John of the Cross
