“Emperor, king, general, duke,” he whispered to himself. “These are just labels. Climb up the family tree of any of them high enough and you’ll find a commoner who dared to take a chance.”

“When I became a bandit, I spent a lot of time being close to the lowliest of the low: criminals, the enslaved, deserters, men who had nothing to lose. Contrary to what I had expected, I found that they had a hardscrabble beauty and grace. They were not mean in their nature, but made mean by the meanness of their rulers. The poor were willing to endure much, but the emperor had taken everything from them.
These men have simple dreams: a plot of land, a few possessions, a warm house, conversations with friends, and a happy wife and healthy children. They remember the smallest acts of kindness and think me a good man because of a few exaggerated stories. They've raised me on their shoulders and called me duke, and I have a duty to help them get a little closer to their dreams.”

“Whether people see you as a shadow or as an invisible or stupid sort of thing, a time will come when that Image of yours will never be seen by commoners.”

“And this fine young prince had fallen in love with a Nobody from Nowhere -- as princes sometimes do, though not as often as romantic tradition would have you believe.”

“To understand reality, you must to some extent change the characteristics of this reality in your mind. Otherwise, the reality can be, in general, incomprehensible in the mind. For that reason, it can be said that the majority lives in illusion, partly, but without even knowing that there can be some kind of fusion of reality with illusion in the mind -- only some are aware of it.”

“Merrick pulled up after a few moments, smiling. “Probably not how I’m supposed to behave toward a prince.”
Larkin gripped Merrick’s backside to hold him in place. “Indeed, you ill-bred commoner, how dare you?”

“So, ‘order’ will mean "guards with spears, whom the nobles will bribe to harass unwanted commoners". ‘Beauty’ will mean "removing benches where people can sleep - and erecting statues in any open space, in which a large group could loiter, especially for the purpose of protests.”

“Celebrities and famous people live in a translucent bubble. When common people (for want of a better term) see a celebrity, the skin of the bubble of fame serves to magnify and elevate the celebrity in the eyes of the common people. And conversely when the celebrity views the common people outwardly through the translucent skin of the bubble they live in, they see the common people as diminished.
Although it is understandable that the celebrity wishes to have all the power and advantage of their elevated status it is somewhat naïve and selfish that most of them want to also be able to communicate with the common people as the common people communicate with each other, when it suits the celebrity. That is, in their leisure time when they go out in public to a bar or café.
In other words, they want to be treated as a common person in such a public situation, yet on the other hand enjoy the perks of being a celebrity. They want to have their cake and eat it too. In this untenable situation most of them will find out that in fact fame is a double-edged sword and there are also great disadvantages to it for them.
In reality, the only way they can communicate with the common people as the common people communicate with each other, is if their bubble of fame and fortune bursts and they lose all their elevated status and wealth. Such as when a celebrity succumbs to drug or alcohol addiction and ends up living on the streets.”
