“She returned to the kitchen, where she'd been making sugared flowers. Mint leaves, tiny violets and old-fashioned rose petals, heavy with perfume, lay on the counter. Very gently she dipped each one into the stiff egg whites, then in confectioners' sugar, and then placed them on the baking sheet, which she put in the warm oven, the door ajar. It gave the room the scent of a garden, heady and sweet.
Sabine had planned to store the sweets in canning jars- there were still a few gaskets and lids left- and save them for cake. When she was a child, her grand-mère had once made her a Saint-Honoré for her birthday. It was the most wondrous cake in the world. Not a cake at all but a composition of tiny puffs of choux pastry filled with vanilla cream, very much like profiteroles, but molded together with caramel and covered with whipped chantilly cream fresh from the dairy. Her grand-mère decorated it with candied flowers and mint leaves.
Sabine never had anything like it before or since and suddenly wanted to make that cake again.”

“For the meeting, I'd laid out a wide variety of fillings and sauces on the table, with the sauces in my antique chafing dishes to stay warm. And it was true---there was a lot of food. I'd provided prosciutto, roasted red peppers, toasted walnuts, fig preserves, and a cheese sauce made with fontina. The savory ingredients were intended for the brown-butter buckwheat crepes.
For dessert, I'd provided sweet crepes made with my grandmother's recipe. Antique china bowls containing Nutella, sweetened mascarpone, lemon curd, and sliced fresh fruit fought for space on the table.
The crepe I was most proud of, though, was my stracciatella crepe. In a nod to the gelato flavor, I'd attacked the chocolate bar with my trusty Microplane zester and incorporated it as a last ingredient in my chilled crepe batter.”

“She pulled on her silver miniskirt, loving the way it showed off her hip bones and belly ring, then she twisted into a black cropped top. The sleeves covered her arms from wrist to shoulder and hid the worst of her bruises. She stretched and let the neckline slip low.
Her heart raced with anticipation. She took a deep breath, trying to quell her excitement about telling Derek her decision. Then she stared into the mirror, brushed on glitter eye shadow, and added sparkle to her hair. Tiny diamonds glimmered against her black curls. She pasted three pink stars on her cheek, then squeezed strobe cream into her palms and rubbed it over her legs. Her skin glowed, and the sweet fragrance of gardenias scented the air. She angled one foot in front of the other and cast a sly smile at her reflection. A thrill rushed through her. She looked like an enchantress.”
