“Game shows are designed to make us feel better about the random, useless facts that are all we have left of our education.”

“For how many generations now had his people been turning their backs on things? How long had they sat in their living rooms and watched other people die?”

“So, what’s behind door number one?” Mary commented, bringing him out of his thoughts as the second air lock door opened.
“Pardon?”
“Oh, nothing. Game show reference, I make silly comments when I get nervous.”
He led the way in to the corridor, on either side glass windows looked over the flanking rooms but it was too dark to see anything. Valdagerion suddenly stopped, listening. Abruptly he pressed her flat against the wall, almost crushing her just as four armed Unseeile appeared around the curve in the corner, rifles aiming. Blue bursts of light and heat flew past them.
“Shit.” Mary squeaked. “I would have settled for the cuddly toy.”

“On game shows, they should make the poor people who are competing or begging for money live in a Super-Max prison for the whole season. There's a show I would watch.”

“In shock, Gilder Warren turned on a polished heel and was confronted by the figure of a young girl standing at a half-open door. She had pink, fluffy hair and thick eyeliner that made her eyes seem to squint with pleasure.
'Sparkle?' the man stuttered out. The girl frowned and entered the lounge, her extravagant costume flashing with metallic colours as she confronted the Gilder.
'Name's Damsie. You used to call me that, not the other,' she squeaked in displeasure.
'Damsie,' the man smiled apologetically and in response the glittery lips of the girl curved in satisfaction, dark eyes slitting with contentment. She moved closer and he held up his hands in warning, glancing nervously at the blank wall over his shoulder a moment and then at his wrist. 'You shouldn't be here,' he admonished her.
'Nor should you Warren. Show's on a high. Might need you.'
'Have I been called?' Gilder Warren wiped his face with a shaky hand. Things were starting to go wrong and this little thing who followed him around like a lost puppy in hopes of climbing the Syren ladder with his help and influence was proving to be a nuisance.
'Nope. Just saying.' Sparkle Damsie stamped a booted foot. 'Why you skulking here? If they need you they can't find you.' She held out a bejewelled hand, wealth Lordling Salvatore lent her for the show, and offered to lead the older man back to his usual station among the other minions.
'No, Damsie, I want to be alone for a bit.' He shrugged his padded shoulders. 'You know,' looking up and around him as if indicating the wider scope of things, 'not comfortable with the way it's going out there.'
The girl's slender figure slumped a little at this.
'I know. Scary. Show goes on though,' she unconsciously quoted an ageless saw. 'Just that, if it gets too scary I would want a hand or something to hold on to, for comfort's sake,' and she gave him a meaningful smoky look.
Gilder Warren nodded.
'I'll be there, promise,' he said with more feeling than he expected. She was such a tiny, vulnerable thing, too young and Sightless to be following in the sordid ways of the Syrens she so wanted to imitate. 'Now scoot. I would meditate.'
The girl wordlessly withdrew, familiar with his apparent desire to be alone with his thoughts for of a necessity he had to cultivate this side of his character to help cope with being surrounded by the shallow followers of Glitter World, scoffers and detractors of the more pure and simple life inspired by the Ancient Ones and their
