We pretend to care because caring is fashionable, not because we'd lift a finger.
We say we want change, then protect the system that grinds us down. We tell ourselves it will get better. It never does, and years later we get nostalgic for the same past we complained about. Hope is just the anesthetic that keeps us compliant.
