“Jarret insists on being a throwback to some earlier, “simpler” time. Now does not suit him. Religious tolerance does not suit him. The current state of the country does not suit him. He wants to take us all back to some magical time when everyone believed in the same God, worshipped him in the same way, and understood that their safety in the universe depended on completing the same religious rituals and stomping anyone who was different. There was never such a time in this country. But these days when more than half the people in the country can’t read at all, history is just one more vast unknown to them.”

“Jarret supporters have been known, now and then, to form mobs and burn people at the stake for being witches. Witches! In 2032! A witch, in their view, tends to be a Moslem, a Jew, a Hindu, a Buddhist, or, in some parts of the country, a Mormon, a Jehovah’s Witness, or even a Catholic. A witch may also be an atheist, a “cultist,” or a well-to-do eccentric. Well-to-do eccentrics often have no protectors or much that’s worth stealing. And “cultist” is a great catchall term for anyone who fits into no other large category, and yet doesn’t quite match Jarret’s version of Christianity. Jarret’s people have been known to beat or drive out Unitarians, for goodness’ sake. Jarret condemns the burnings, but does so in such mild language that his people are free to hear what they want to hear. As for the beatings, the tarring and feathering, and the destruction of “heathen houses of devil-worship,” he has a simple answer: “Join us! Our doors are open to every nationality, every race! Leave your sinful past behind, and become one of us. Help us to make America great again.” He’s had notable success with this carrot-and-stick approach. Join us and thrive, or whatever happens to you as a result of your own sinful stubbornness is your problem.”

“In the politics of eternity, the seduction by a mythicized past prevents us from thinking about possible futures. The habit of dwelling on victimhood dulls the impulse of self-correction. Since the nation is defined by its inherent virtue rather than by its future potential, politics becomes a discussion of good and evil rather than a discussion of possible solutions to real problems. Since the crisis is permanent, the sense of emergency is always present; planning for the future seems impossible or even disloyal. How can we even think of reform when the enemy is always at the gate?”

“In 2016, into this tangle of worry and anger, came a showman who made big promises. A man who swore he would drain the swamp, then surrounded himself with the lobbyists and billionaires who run the swamp and feed off government favors. A man who talked the talk of populism but offered the very worst of trickle-down economics. A man who said he knew how the corrupt system worked because he had worked it for himself many times. A man who vowed to make America great again and followed up with attacks on immigrants, minorities, and women. A man who was always on the hunt for his next big con.”

“. . . we hadn't even noticed when all this had been happening, the words "turning point" and "dawn of a new era" were hardly out of our mouths when precisely this critical, time-bound nature of a turning point and a dawn was rendered ludicrous as we realized that all of a sudden we were living in a new world, had entered a radically new era, and we understood none of it, because everything we had was obsolete, including our conditioned reflexes, our attempts to understand the nature of a process, how "all of this" had "consequently" proceeded from there to here, everything was as obsolete as our conviction to rely on experience, on sober rationality . . .”

“The hive mind is boring, small and thinks and works on the same wavelength as stupidity. It elects morons for presidents and still defends their mistakes and crimes out of childish fear and self interest and follows false religious beliefs that have been altered. So if you ever wonder why mankind hasn't progressed as far as you believed it once could have? Blame those who can't count to three correctly without thinking about if it's ok with their ilk to be able to do so. And whenever the hive mind's existence is threatened? They always resort to violence because that's the evidence of pure unadulterated stupidity. These are not independent thinkers. These are unconscious slaves of their own making and an unending threat to a better society and a far better world.”

“Senility is a relinquishment of life as it is in the here and now and the taking of refuge into the security and familiarity of the past. When life becomes too confusing, too complex, too strange, too much, then you turn away.”

“When Destiny Turns To Dust (Sonnet 2406)
At the end of the century,
fascism leaves no lasting mark
on thousand year old civilizations,
it's only the adolescent countries like
the US that get wiped out of existence.
Tyrants come, tyrants go,
both foreign and domestic,
ancient civilizations endure political
upheaval like a bleep in the continuum,
whereas, destiny manifested on patchwork history
and bootleg culture, collapse into obsolescence.
So the world continues, culture continues,
reformation continues, even better without
the parasitic powers of world politics -
civilization thrives for they're never aloof,
but ever entwined with Nature's dynamics.”

“America is The Warning (Sonnet)
Finally America has fallen,
it's a great day for the human race,
now that the american dream is infected,
it's a golden occasion for earth upliftment.
Uncle Sam has contracted something nasty,
nothing surprising, it's long time coming;
the time has never been more immaculate,
for actual human cultures and civilizations
to dream beyond the monkeys of silicon valley.
It's a golden age of decolonization,
time to rescue your mind from the parasites;
it's time for great rejoicing, now that
the land of plague has lost its marbles -
fall of America is a blessing for humankind.
West never had culture to begin with,
neither Washington nor Rome or Buck House -
when parasites bury themselves in castles,
light of the human engulf the world around.”

“An American Prayer (Divine Comedy, Sonnet)
The other day I was having a chat with God,
she was telling me about the prayers flooding
in from America, all claiming extreme religiousness:
let our wall stand bold and tall,
fighting off all indigenous impurities,
let us paint it pitch black,
so it's too hot to be climbed by the savages;
now let us deport every last trace of sense,
let us deport all who defy our holy faith -
let us ban all blacks, whites, muslims alike,
whoever talks the nonsense of tolerance.
Then the Holy Mother sighed in despair, and said,
"and to think they are doing all that in my name!"
So I paused for a moment, then I grinned -
why not grant their wishes, then flood the entire Eden!”

“. . . it is already here by the time we realize that it has arrived again, always finding us unprepared, even though we ought to be aware that it is coming, that it is secured only temporarily, we ought to hear its chains scraping, loosening, the hiss of knots coming undone in the until then tight cordage, deep down inside us we ought to KNOW that it is about to break loose, and that is how it should have been this time too, we should have known that this is how it would be, that it was bound to come, but we only awoke to the realization, if we awoke at all, that it was here already, and that we were in trouble . . .”

“. . . suddenly my ears registered a grating noise, as if cumbersome chains were clattering in the distance, and my ears registered a slight scraping sound, as if securely knotted ropes were slowly slipping loose -- all I could hear was this grating clatter and this scary scraping, and once more I thought of my ancient language, and of the utter silence into which I had tumbled, I sat there staring at the outside and as complete darkness filled the room only one thing was completely certain: it had broken loose, it was closing in, it was already here.”

“Not so long ago, the dolts among us were free to think their thoughts quietly to themselves with no easy way to share them. At worst, a person would usually just embarrass himself in front of his own family or bowling team. Bad ideas had a harder time scaling and reproducing, so lots of stupidity stayed local, and everyone else could happily overestimate the average person's intelligence because they saw less of it. But then we connected everyone on the planet and gave them each the equivalent of their own printing press, radio station and TV network. Now, even those with nothing useful to say can tell the whole world exactly, or more often vaguely, what they think.
. . . In theory, this is the democratization of expression. In practice, it feels like a crowdsourced lobotomy.
