“A Fair Opportunity Deserves Our Full Commitment
We all hope that at some point an opportunity will arise that can improve our life, our work or our future. Sometimes we wait a long time for it. Sometimes an opportunity appears unexpectedly, precisely at a moment when we almost no longer dare to believe that anything can change. When that opportunity presents itself, it is important that we recognize it and do not let it pass because of fear, doubt or complacency. Not every opportunity returns. Some doors open only once and at that moment require our attention, courage and full commitment. Yet life is not always fairly distributed. One person seems to receive several opportunities, while someone else works hard and barely moves forward. Everything appears to be happening on the other side, while our own side remains still. That can be frustrating, disappointing and sometimes even painful. We should never judge too quickly. Someone who has not yet received a fair opportunity has not deserved it any less. Not every disadvantage arises from too little effort and not every success is solely the result of hard work. Circumstances, health, deception, misfortune and the choices of others can have a major influence on someone’s life. What we can try to preserve is our belief in ourselves, even when a period is difficult and we do not know whether the rain will be followed immediately by sunshine or by another storm. A storm can take many things away from us. Possessions can disappear, plans can fail and expectations can be broken. Yet a storm does not have to take away our character, dignity and perseverance. With a positive attitude, honest intentions and the willingness to begin again, we can slowly rise once more. That does not mean sadness simply disappears or that every form of damage can be fully repaired. It does mean that we do not have to let our life be permanently determined by what went wrong. Progress usually does not happen in one large step. It grows through small decisions, repeated efforts and the ability to try again after disappointment. Every honest attempt brings us closer to a new goal, even when we cannot yet see the final result. We can keep waiting until an opportunity finds us on its own, but waiting alone changes very little. Hope is valuable, but hope also needs movement. Anyone who wants to go somewhere must be willing to take the first step, prepare carefully and act when the right moment arrives. Making use of an opportunity does not mean success is guaranteed. It means giving ourselves the possibility to grow, learn and move forward. Even when the result turns out differently from what we expected, the experience can make us stronger, wiser and better prepared. That is why we should not only hope for a fair opportunity. We should also show that we are prepared to approach it carefully, honestly and with full commitment when it appears. Not because we have to prove that we are valuable enough as human beings. Our human value stands apart from that. But because a valuable opportunity deserves our attention, responsibility and commitment. Every second that passes will never return. We cannot relive the past, but we can use today to give our future a new direction. A fair opportunity deserves our full commitment. When it comes, let us not allow it to pass carelessly, but embrace it with both hands, a clear mind and sincere courage.
