“I've always been uncomfortable with compliments, though I have a pathological need for them.”

C.S. Lewis
“I wanted to be a wife so that I could have been her real mother. I wanted to be a boy so that she could be in love with me. I wanted her to be my full sister instead of my half sister. I wanted her to be a slave so that I could set her free and make her rich.”
C. S. Lewis

Jessica Tom
“I like your passion. It makes me happy to meet people who know what they want and are going for it. Especially when those people are beautiful, like you."
I retreated into the shadow of the banquette. Man, he made me feel so good.
"It can be scary to pursue your dream, but I think the key is to surround yourself with people who support you," he said. 'My parents loved to cook. My mom is Filipino and my dad is French- both food cultures. They put me on this cooking track and I never looked back."
"Oh!" I said. So that's why he looked a little like me. "I'm also mixed," I said.
He smiled shyly. "I know," he said. And then I blushed, too.”

Lisa Kleypas
“No one's ever had this effect on me before. I feel ten times more alive." She laughed self-consciously. "Does that sound silly?"
"Not at all. I understand. Your mother had the same effect on me."
"Did she?"
The earl let out a gravelly chuckle as he thought back to those days. "She was a fearless, free-spirited beauty with all the self-restraint of an unbroken horse. I knew she wasn't to the only life I could offer her. But I was mesmerized by her. I loved her enthusiasm and warmth, and everything that made her different from me. I thought if we were both willing to take a chance on each other, we might have a good marriage. It's turned out to be an extraordinary one."
"No regrets, then?" Merritt dared to ask. "Even in the privacy of your own thoughts?"
"Never," he said promptly. "Without Lillian, I would never have known true happiness. I don't hold with the common wisdom that a couple must have the same tastes and backgrounds. Married life would be dull indeed without some friction: one can't light a match without it."
Merritt smiled. "I adore you, Papa. You've made it nearly impossible for me to find a man who doesn't suffer in comparison to you.”
Lisa Kleypas, Devil in Disguise

Amy E. Reichert
“You're reading Outlander?" Steph said, pointing to the book cover.
Astra loved that book, about a woman who had escaped into the past to live another life and find true love. She had reread the entire series three times and here he was reading it. Such a surprising choice. She would have expected him to read something by Tom Wolfe or Stephen King, maybe even some presidential memoirs, but certainly not a time-traveling historical romance. She should know better than to try to predict a person's reading preferences--- they were never what you anticipated.
Jack shrugged and set her kringle on the countertop.
"I like how even time can't keep two people who belong together apart.”
Amy E. Reichert, Once Upon a December

Jojo Moyes
“He doesn't want to find himself seated beside Janey, to feel her leaning against him as she laughs, her knee gravitating toward his.”
Jojo Moyes, The Girl You Left Behind
