Byung-Chul Han
“There is no time that is not work. Work is time. [...] Work is the agent of history. Thus, the working slave advances to the position of the sole subject of historical progress. It follows that the master, by contrast, freezes into an inactive and unproductive identity. Because the slave is the sole acting subject of history, it is the slave alone who determines the course of history. [...] (Labour) remains the same at all times and without exception, acting as a dispositif which can take moral, economic or religious forms. The working slave uses this dispositif specifically in order to turn the power relation upside down, and thus to his favour. Its increasing importance eventually makes it a predominant social dispositif. The society with which history reaches its completion is accordingly a society of labour – a society in which everyone works, even does nothing but work. As a result of the totalization of labour everyone will become a labourer at the end of history.”
