“The Lowest Bid
by Stewart Stafford
The sceptre is cast to the shivering sea,
A drowned baptism of the pact of monarchy.
A blinding vision of the fallen from on high,
New roving dregs with a scavenger’s eye.
Yield up the light, coax out the dying flame,
Punishment for crimes revokes your name.
Is liberation founded upon phantom delusion?
It persists as the architect’s cold conclusion.
Endure degradation’s searing descent
To a brimstone pool of a crimson crescent—
Shadow throne invoked by seditious implication.
Collusion not coercion, mummified by mediation.
Trust not the Janus offer, the beatific start—
They can only embalm the chasms in the heart.
