message 1: by Liam (new)

Liam In 1992 I was working in a pizzeria; the boss was a Lebanese immigrant, and easily one of the best bosses I ever worked for. Every morning, as soon as we turned everything on and brewed the coffee, he would ask what we should have for breakfast, and while he prepared the food I would walk across the crumbling parking lot to the bookstore nearby. When I bought that day's copy of The New York Times, I made a point of never looking at it. I folded it carefully in half, walked back to the pizza shop, and laid it on the table at which we always ate. When the food was ready, we sat down with our coffee, and he would say "well, Liam, let's see what is happening in the world today". We held our breath as he flipped the paper open, and looked at the headlines. If we didn't see Beirut or Belfast in the headlines, we knew it would be a reasonably good day. So we would lean back, take another breath, and proceed to enjoy our breakfast while passing sections of the paper back and forth across the table...
