Aaron Boyd Thank you for your suggestions. Some horror is fine. In fact, H.P. Lovecraft is my favorite author. I am most in love with The Strange High House in the Mist and Through the Gates of the Silver Key. The first for it's language, which is bordering on poetry, and the second for it's mind-bending concepts. I do love the awe and terror present in his work but am currently looking for something that crosses genres and contains fantasy, but is not cliche and predictable. I recently read Arthur Machen's The White People and found it to be pretty close to what I was looking for.

Aaron Boyd Also I read Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and loved its atmospheric quality and language but I'm looking for something with less doom and gloom.

Feliks You have admirable tastes. I salute you.

I believe I can recommend many titles for you. And for example, if you read Lovecraft's essay on Supernatural Literature, (1934) you will find a comprehensive survey not only of all the leading figures of 19th century horror but also, the authors which influenced Lovecraft himself.

In the meantime, try these...they all have rich language.

The Gormenghast Novels
The Unlimited Dream Company
Sweet Dreams
The Guyana Quartet
We Have Always Lived in the Castle
The Haunting of Hill House
All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By
The Night Land (mentioned in the survey cited above)
