oops, sorry, hit recommend too fast. Maybe not JAH best book, not too sure. But she definetely hits the buttons of "like Mary Stewart" and "like Daphne duMaurier" - though I would give advantage to Daphne and Mary. Just mentioning the name, no favorite books, because I think she writes the kind of books you specify.
