only 4 & 7 in the series ..
No, no, they're just reasonable places to start. Basically everyone agrees the first few are a little weak. #4 provides sufficient exposition and context that you can read it without the previous books.
Same with #7--it was the first released as hardback, so it was written with the intention of allowing new readers to jump in. #4 or #7 would give you a clearer idea of the (currently 14-book) series--then you could decide if you wanted to read more.
