Wonder by RJ Palacio - we just read it in our women's book club and loved it, but it is meant for your kids' age group. About a 5th grade boy with a facial deformity. So good.
Two books I remember loving in late grade school: The Westing Game - Ellen Rankin. I reread that book at least 5 times. Ranked 5th- 8th. Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. Our fourth grade teacher read this one aloud to us. It is ranked as 6th and up. Both are award-winning and should be age appropriate but challenging.
