Forgetless - a comedy thriller about the last night of a cool New York club. Has the advantage of only being the one book, too, rather than an epic saga. Saga is currently the default comic to recommend to almost anyone, but has some gore, a fair amount of heartbreak, and more than a little politics (albeit space politics).
