Have you read "Unbroken"? It is a non-fiction account of Louis Zamperini during WWII. It is really well written and reads like fiction. It is a great book!
Here is a memoir that is really good. I am not sure if you read it but it is called "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. It is terrific.

OK, I feel like I am striking out. Here are two more and hopefully I can be at least of some assistance. "The Good Earth", by Pearl S. Buck and "Flowers for Algernon", by Daniel Keyes. OK, I will throw in a third - "Earth Abides", by George R. Stewart. I hope that helps!
