Please try the 'Redwall' series by the late Brian Jacques. My FAVORITE series during my early to mid teens...and a decade later, I still enjoy them. Lots of plot twists, lots of action - but the characters are woodland creatures, like mice, moles, squirrels, otters, hares (NOT rabbits!), and badgers. The villians are always vermin - foxes, weasels, stoats, rats, etc. Very fun to read - and sometimes, the vermin are pirates! There is a whole series of over 20 books, so make sure you start at the beginning if you decide to read. My favorite titles include Salamandastron, The Long Patrol, Lord Brocktree, High Rhulain, & Taggerung.
