The Ranger's Apprentice is a great series, set back in medieval times. The protagonist and his mentor are both hilarious throughout the series along with his best friend.

The Outcasts is the first book of The Brotherband Chronicles, which is a sister series to The Ranger's Apprentice. I suggest reading The Ranger's Apprentice first, as there are mentions of it in th I'm recommending two series.
