My first exposure to this very specific genre was Make Your Home Among Strangers, and some of my favorite books over the last 5 years have been Pachiko by Min Jin Lee (but not Free Food for Millionaires), City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert (but not Eat, Pray, Love), The Air You Breathe, The Other Black Girl, In Every Mirror She's Black, and anything by Xochitl Gonzalez and Elif Shafak. I don't generally like books based in wars or wartime (e.g., WWII, Vietnam War), with the exception of The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. Any and all recommendations based on the above are welcome!...more
