My students are all female, and almost all of them are mothers. I want a novel that will be a page turner, and something that deals with content that is relevant to their lives. We read The Hate U Give and Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas, and they loved both of them. We're currently reading Where the Crawdads sing. While the most important thing is that the book is interesting to them, it also has to have literary merit, and be somewhat school appropriate. It should also be somewhat lexically simple, and easy to follow. We read the Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, and it was a little hard for them to follow. Since so many of my students are young parents, topics such as motherhood, romance, coming of age, and women finding their voice/stepping into their power resonate with my students. ...more
