America Singer (I know weird name but she is in the 'Arts/Music' cast so it makes sense in context) is in love with Aspen, only he's in a lower cast than even her, working as a labourer. Their romance would be difficult as is and require a lot of money at registry offices for their trouble. Their romance would be difficult as is and require a lot of money at registry offices for their trouble. Things get worse however, as Aspen has a large family to look after, and so wants to hold off on marrying her until after he's been accepted as a guard/military man and moves up the ranks a bit. Under pressure from her mother, who does not know of her secret with Aspen, she signs up for the Selection, an event held for the prince of their kingdom to meet a future wife among the people of the city. So she and every other young girl's name is in the metaphorical hat to meet the prince. It's very unlikely she will be chosen, she tells herself. And this way she has at least made her mother happy.
When she is picked for the Selection, she is completely mortified, only held from running away screaming by her mothers constant reminders that the families of the selected receive care packages (AKA money) to keep them while one of their family is away. Telling herself that she is in it only for the money and good food, she is transferred to the palace to win the heart of prince maxon, whom she doesn't even know. It turns out that Maxon is cute (as all young princes are in the books) and has a lot of big ideas for abolishing the cast system that America would very happily jump on board with. After being told by Aspen that he didn't want to marry her, and now meeting this dorky loveable prince she decides to give the Selection a shot. There are many other competitors though and there is some hair-pulling and teacup throwing girl fights which are hilarious! As an added trouble Aspen is posted as a guard to the palace. In fact the prince unknowingly posts him outside of America's room. This series is a whirl wind of feelings and really pulls at the heart string. There are three novels focusing on America and two in the series that go on to feature her daughter :P I'd recommend. Definite. Both my sister and I are obsessed! ...more "
