Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon is part of an excellent series set in Venice. Cosi Fan Tutti by Michael Dibdon set in Naples is quite good too. Or if you wanted to stay in Venice, try Dead Lagoon. Paper Moon by Camelleri is set in Sicily and on the lighter side. The Dante Killings is a bit more of a thriller set in Rome. Alibi by Joseph Kanon is dark, but very well written, also set in Venice.
