Maybe The Edge of Nowhere, by Elizabeth George? This is her first YA novel, she usually writes the Inspector Lynley mysteries which routinely force me to look up words...I love it!
Ship Breaker and Drowned Cities, by Paolo Bacigalupi are also interesting, though not as brainy. "
