Paulo wanted to read: I want to read a science fiction or fantasy book with grown up problems. Not some absurd plot to take over the world, not a coming of age story, but something small in scale, with good characters and a pretty pessimistic view.

My favourites use the plot style of hardboiled detective stories: relatively small-scale "man's inhumanity to man" style stuff. The one I recommended is very, very noir--that means dark and very gritty.
