I almost always read a book only if it has a HEA (one or two exceptions if GR friends urge me to read them).
My rating style:
6 stars - Omg... awesome! Too good! Book boyfriend/ kick ass heroine/ extremely good plot. Love these books
5 stars - Made me smile. Got me involved.
4 stars - Okay to read once. Acceptable. Like them.
3 stars - Bleh.. Boring
2 stars - Never use this rating. Mostly discontinue reading the book before I torture myself some more.
1 star - Hate everything about the book. Most likely couldn't stomach reading it fully.
Rating a book is partly about finding the right book to read at the right time in the right mood. The rest of the time it's just the book.
And I really wish there was a 3.5 and a 4.5 rating. Some books need that
