“La narrazione di una serie di eventi, anche quando viene rielaborata da uno storico, contiene sempre una selezione arbitraria che propone un contenuto non riducibile alla verità dei singoli fatti raccontati. Per quanto si tenti di tenere l'interpretazione separata dagli elementi fattuali, la narrazione intreccia inevitabilmente il significato che si vuole dare agli eventi, alla loro selezione e giustapposizione. A maggior ragione una narrazione dal forte e intenzionale carattere ideologico, com'è necessariamente quella che cercano di divulgare i diversi attori all'indomani di un evento contrastato come l'Ottobre, contiene in sé un elemento di giudizio che prevale sui fatti stessi riordinandoli in modo coerente. Paradossalmente, anche due narrazioni diverse e contrapposte possono mantenere un livello di verità storica convincente o accettabile, perché la fonte della sua legittimazione è comunque l'interpretazione, al di là del modo più o meno veritiero o verosimile con cui gli eventi sono stati raccontati.”
