Zenia: What did we actually know about her?

By the end of the novel I was thoroughly confused as to whether the character of Zenia even existed, at least in the same way the other characters did or whether their own insecurites had conjured her up.
That aside, I was wondering what truths were in fact revealed about her and was hoping someone could help me out. So far all I know is she studied history while living in McClung Hall with West and Tony; (then a huge gap where she presumably travelled with her several different passports); then, became a heroin user, got ovarian cancer and finally died of a drug overdose before falling into the fountain.

That's a good question, that makes it seem almost like a feminine version of fight club!

We know that she was a journalist in Europe before returning to Canada to work on the women's magazine with Roz.

Its been a while since I read this but I think Zenia was drawn pretty broadly and when I first read this book, I thought she was pretty self centered. While that is true, I think she became the challenge that each of these women had to face for some growth in their lives. Let's face it, Tony, Roz and Charis weren't much in the way of characters until they had to respond to what Zenia was doing/did to them. She forced them to react to the situations she created.

If you see it from that perspective, does it matter what background she had and why she behaved as she did?
