Firstly, one needs to learn about 'Bonding' with your Dragon. You and your soul-mate or bond-mate can understand each other and connect like no other human and beast, so that you can learn to grasp what the other ones emotions and thoughts are. Like in Eragon you have to 'see' as it were into Saphira's mind to be able to call her, similarly with your own Dragon - you need to learn how deep that connection goes. Lesson one - bond-mate
