Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Hi all!

It's time for November book nominations. As you all know, we had an election on whether or not to read two books per month, and if so, how to choose them. The majority vote went to reading the top two winners in the general book poll, which I have to say is my preference since it requires less work on my part. (Whew)

And so, here it is, that time again. The rules for nominating books have not changed. All nominations need to be seconded, need to be available in a variety of formats, and need to be posted with a link (see 'add book/author' link at the top of the comment box).

No fair nominating your own book!

Happy nominating!

message 5: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Lies of Locke Lamora has already been read by the group, but it was back in 2009, so I suppose we could reconsider it, if the group would like. I forgot to say to please check the group's bookshelf before nominating.

I'm so sorry, I did go through the group's bookshelf, I even typed in the search to be sure I didn't overlook it. Again, sorry :(

No problem. It's way on the last page. And it's on my to read list. I think I may even have it on my Nook!

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Thomas wrote: "I'll nominate Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, starting with Lord Foul's Bane"

I think a lot of people has problems with Thomas Covenant as a character. So I don't think this book will ever win, even though I love the series.

message 18: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments How about The Morgaine Saga by C.J. Cherryh? (Or at least the first volume, Gate of Ivrel?) If you start scratching the paint off the surface, you could argue it's SF, but it certainly feels like fantasy in just about every way that matters. (Similar to Gene Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer in that regard.)

message 19: by Katy (new)

Katy (kathy_h) I'll nominate Alif the Unseen.

message 20: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Thomas wrote: "I'll nominate Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, starting with Lord Foul's Bane"

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Can I ask that we dont repeat Locke Lamora, great book but already done it? Plus there are some great new suggestions on this thread.

message 27: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Bev wrote: "Can I ask that we dont repeat Locke Lamora, great book but already done it? Plus there are some great new suggestions on this thread."

I agree, there are too many great books out there to reread a book for a club read, even though I think the people who are seconding it were not with the club when it was read the first time.

message 28: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 87 comments Three Hearts And Three Lions by Poul Anderson

A 20th-century fighter is snatched into a world of sword-wielding knights and spell-casting sorcerers. When a bullet creases Holger Carlsen's skull and hurls him into a magical realm of dragons and witches, he soon finds that he has a ready-made set of enemies in this new land.

message 29: by Martin (new)

Martin Belcher (martinbelcher) I'd like to nominate Nights of Villjamur (Legends of the Red Sun, #1) by Mark Charan Newton by Mark Charan Newton I'm not sure if it's been read by the group yet,

Adrianna [SypherLily] (sypherlily) | 59 comments I agree in not reading it for the book club. It just starts up more hassle and then there will be the question of other books the club has read. I will stick with Vengeance and read loll on my own: )

message 31: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Adrianna LOLL is a fantastic book and a must read.

James (jimboh) | 4 comments I'd like to nominate Legend by David Gemmell.

message 37: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) Ill second King of Thorns

message 38: by Frank (last edited Sep 15, 2012 03:31PM) (new)

Frank Ryan (frankryan) | 36 comments Although people might not immediately think of it, Hilary Mantel's Beyond Black is actually a darkly comic fantasy masterpiece. I nominate this book, and thus claim last year's Booker Prize winner, who was shortlisted again in this year's prize, to the fold of fantasy.

message 39: by Thomas (last edited Sep 15, 2012 03:46PM) (new)

Thomas Knight (thomasaknight) The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King.

It's next on my reading list, so hey, why not? :)

Glenn (mrgmc2u) Legend by Gemmell, definitely. A classic.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Zayne wrote: "I nominate The Demon Awakens by R.A. Salvatore."

Sorry to say, but I don't think the book is going to get second, since nobody would second my nomination when I nominated Homeland a few month back, which is most famous book.

message 43: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 14 comments I'll second The Eyes of the Dragon.

message 45: by carol. (new)

carol. How about an unusual one: Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was. It won the World Fantasy Award in 1985. The narrative is a little like a folktale.

message 46: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Homeland is what i vote for

You must not have read the part about not nominating your own books.

message 50: by Todd (new)

Todd | 36 comments Going through the bookshelf there are a few I really want to get a hold of to catch up. But I'm sad that there isn't a Feist book in there. Most seem to be more recent releases, and I'm sure not everyone is a fan but I'd nominate.

So I'd nominate Magician: Apprentice...

Magician Apprentice (The Riftwar Saga, #1) by Raymond E. Feist

Although to be honest Daughter of the Empire is my favourite of the series, maybe it's Janny Wurts' contributions.
