This is a different kind of discrimination and I am not happy about it. A convicted killer is trying to say that he is too fat to executed here in Ohio. Ronald Post who is 480 lbs. says that since he has bad veins that it would be "cruel and unusual punishment" to execute him by lethal injection, that it would create "complications".
Post was denied gastrobypass surgery 2 years ago with it being deemed unnecessary from a medical standpoint. His weight has gone up and down for years, including a loss of 150 lbs. He as broken equipment (probably because it was not designed for his weight limit) and claims that since he has bad knees and such, he was not able to to work out, hence his weight gain, which is subtly placing the blame on the state.
It has been 30 years that this guy has been in jail for the murder of a motel desk clerk in 1983 and was convicted in 1985. Helen Vantz's death left behind her son who wants to see justice served. I say that is too long for this dip nut to be on this planet regardless of his size. I am sick of hearing "not guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect" when it should be guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect." I do not care if somebody truly understands what they did. I stand by you do the crime you do the time. Perhaps truly disabled persons should not be in the same prisons as hardened criminals, but they should be able to face the same punishments as others.
Yes, I am passionate about the death penalty being used. Many will tell you that capital punishment doesn't work. Of course it doesn't if you don't use it! If dip nuts like this guy can start "twinkie defensing" themselves out of rightful punishments and sentences, then where is the incentive to not go out and kill another person if they know that they can sit in jail for the next 20 or more years while they try to wriggle out of their sentence with nonsense?
If you use consistent consequences with children, they learn (you hope) not to do things they shouldn't and do what they should. If you don't kids learn how to get away with things. That is what is happening here. Post is trying to get away with murder by trying to say his size matters. In this case, to me it doesn't. No matter your size, your age, mental capacity, you did the crime, so now face your punishment. I never liked getting hit as a kid, so I tried to avoid doing things that would get me hit. I didn't always succeed, but I did try very hard. Did I always deserve the severity of my punishment, no, but I did deserve a punishment for breaking a rule that I knew I shouldn't.
Post is trying to get away with murder in the most literal sense. He is trying to get around a matter of his own making and using the excuse of his size to accomplish this. He is not the first to try this tactic either. In 2008 a Richard Cooey said the same thing at 275lbs, that they wouldn't be able to find a vein, but his execution went off with no problems.
I am a hard stick myself, which has led to absolute terror with needles and a development of syncope for me each time a need a blood test. Yet they have found a way to take my blood with little trouble, so I hope that this dip nut pays for his crime and does indeed face injection.
I do not wish to see this reverse discrimination be another weapon for criminals to escape punishment.
