SA Book & Challenge Lovers discussion

This is the official thread for A Bibliophile's Playlist, a music-related challenge. Each person nominates a song and the challenge is to find a book that somehow relates to the title or a theme in the song.

Example.
Hit me baby one more time by Britney Spears
1)you could read a book about an abusive relationship (hit me baby)
2) you could read a book about someone getting a second change/ redemption (one more time)
3)you could look at the lyrics "I must confess my loneliness is killing me"
And read a book about a person confessing to a crime etc. (I must confess)
4) or you could read about a lonely person find love, friendship etc. (my lonelyness is killing me)

So you see all you need to do is show the lyric that ties in with the theme of the book you want to read and if you can find meaning in Britney Speared the you can find it in any song!

You're mending what's broken"
- one of the main characters works in an underground lab 'fixing' dead (ie. broken) bodies by bringing them back to life. In one case, he recreates a woman and falls in love with her.

- And hiding in your smile a secret you must keep Yasuko must keep secret the fact that she and her daughter killed her ex-husband, and their neighbour is covering the murder up for them.
- The theme of the song is love as something that breaks and heals a person. (view spoiler)[Ishigami was healed by love when he met Yasuko and Misato, and their beauty dissuaded him from killing himself. He devoted himself to them, going to far as to construct an elaborate ruse in which he goes to prison for a crime they committed. - A Killer in the Wind by Andrew Klavan
The main character, Dan, tells a woman who loves him that he can never love her back, even though he cares about her. The reason is that he's in love with someone else who, as far as he knows at the time, can't love him either because she doesn't exist.

16. Bohemian Rapsody by Queen
- Me and the Devil by Nick Tosches "Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?" Lyrics match the narrative, where both the protagonist and the reader can't distinguish fantasy from reality

- Wolfhound Century by Peter Higgins
- Set in an alternative Soviet Russia
- Said I'm terrified but I'm not leaving Describes the actions of Maroussia towards the end of the novel. (view spoiler)[She is being hunted by killers but rather than just running away she is determined to help Lom (hide spoiler)]

- Light by M. John Harrison
- "Space Oddity" could describe one of the main characters, Seria Mau Genlicher, and her K-Ship, The White Cat

19. The Gambler by Kenny Rogers
- A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
- I can see you're out of aces Could describe Tyrion's situation, particularly at the end of the novel.
- "If you're gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.
You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run. Could describe the game of thrones that major characters are playing, and the need for smart, careful strategy in war and politics.

20. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
- Expecting Someone Taller by Tom Holt
Every now and then I get a little bit lonely/tired/nervous/terrified/restless/helpless/angry. The main character goes through all these emotions and states of mind, which is very important in the story because his demeanour affects the fate of the world.
In keeping with the love theme of the song, the main character falls in love with a girl, but like living in a powder keg and giving off sparks their love is dangerous because it could lead to an apocalypse.

- The Cutting Room by Mary Watson
- The novel is about homes/buildings and about a relationship, loss and loneliness.

22. Colleen by Joanna Newsom
- Earth Thirst by Mark Teppo
- Like Colleen in the song, the main character has amnesia

23. Cosmic Love - Florence and the Machine
- Six-Gun Tarot by R.S. Belcher
- The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
[...]
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
These lines match events in the later part of the plot, where the sun and moon go out and the stars fall from the sky. There is no dawn.
- So darkness I became. One of the major characters, Holly, is possessed by a primeval monster that is synonymous with darkness. Her body is filled with it's black 'blood', and she symbolically becomes darkness.

- Describes the attitudes of some of the main characters towards people they love or lust after.
