What is everyone's view on reading classics for buddy reads? Would anyone be interested in reading any? I'm asking everyone's opinion first before I post any under buddy reads. Thanks! :)

Well Holly I am guessing it would depend on the classic being read. I am not huge into them but I think if it was a buddy read then it would urge me to read more of them. We could have a "Classic Month".

That's a good idea; you're awesome Janie!
Ok, cool Tracy! Sounds good. Are there any titles anyone wants to throw out there? I've got a couple:
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
I've been wanting to read Anna Karenina. Yeah...I know..I'm probably the only one who hasn't read it. Buuuuuut, it will definitely have to be next year before I read it. And Janie, I'm with you. I've never really gotten into the classics.
Also, just to let everyone know, if you are interested in reading classics and you have a Kindle e-reader, a lot of the classics are free. You don't even have to have a Kindle to read them. You can download the free Kindle App on your computer, iPad, or smartphone.

That one's on my to-read list as well, Kathryn. You're not the only one who hasn't read it! Lol

I was beginning to think I was the only one. yay! Buddy read!! haha
I tried reading Wuthering Heights, just could not do it. LOL I would also love to read The outsiders, I know that is probably not considered one of the Classics, but I have always loved the movie!

Janie wrote: "I tried reading Wuthering Heights, just could not do it. LOL I would also love to read The outsiders, I know that is probably not considered one of the Classics, but I have always loved the movie!"The Outsiders is great. It's been a long time since I've read that one!
I tried reading Jane Eyre and I couldn't get into it. Probably because I had some many other things that I wanted to read at the time. I'll try it again, one of these days. Lol
I have a suggestion .... The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I also have never read Anna Karenina so would be open to that. I have read Jane Eyre and loved it, and read The Outsiders in high school, a long time ago, and loved it.I would also like to add East of Eden by Steinbeck for consideration.
Just to remind everyone, I think Paula is looking for someone to read The Master and Margarita with her. That said, I would consider participating in any classics buddy read as long as it is a book I haven't already read. :)
Please someone tell me what is involved in a "buddy read"? I would love to partner with someone for a classic. (I've tried to read Crime and Punishment so many times, maybe if I had a buddy I could be successful!) I'm also open to other titles.
Terri if you read the top thread (guidelines to Buddy reads)on this board you can read more about how this works.
I've got a few classics on my TBR I'd like to get to someday. Maybe a buddy-read someday in the future would be just the right motivator :)
Great idea, Holly! You know I'd definitely be up for some Classics. Speaking of which, I do believe that Atlas Shrugged would qualify. And you and I've already discussed reading Crime and Punishment together.
Tracey- anything by Steinbeck's a great suggestion, IMO.
Also, Les Misérables. I've never read it, but I've wanted to for a long time.
les mis is one of my fave classics! vanity fair and anna karenina and war and peace are up there too!
I'm not a big fan of the classics. I liked Dickens but I only re-read Christmas Carol. I do love the Sherlock Holmes books and I have a few still to read so if anyone is interested I'd do a buddy read for that. However, I have good friends here so I might be persuaded to read other classics if there is enough interest.
I'm not big on the classics either, Chris. It would definitely take me reading a classic with you guys to even get me close to reading one. haha.
I tried War of the Worlds and could not get into it. Classics take me longer to read. i'm up for an Alice in Wonderland read. I have like 50 something classics for free on my kindle. I prefer them on my kindle because of the language used in classics.
Victor wrote: "Oh yeah! I plan on reading A Christmas Carol this Christmas:D"I'd be willing to read it again with you for Christmas; depending on where I am on other books. I love that story and I try to see it at my old University when I can. Being alumni I get tickets for free and it is usually a really good production.

Thanks Dustin!
Oh, I didn't think it would. Yes, we have. :)
And I agree with your recommendation too!

No, I don't think I am.
Holly wrote: "I've been meaning to read my Sherlock Holmes."Well if there is enough interest for Sherlock Holmes I would gladly start a buddy read for February. I'm up to Valley of Fear but will gladly re-read one of the earlier ones.
I absolutely love Sherlock Holmes. 'The Hound Of Baskervilles' is my favourite! For all my buddies who adore horror, we must have a buddy read on 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker. I read that book and never slept for two days in a row. I remember praying the rosary five times and saying the Lord's prayer a hundred times and going to bed after seeing shadows in my bedroom.
'Les Miserables' is another beautiful classic. O Henry's 'The Gift Of THe Magi' and 'The Last Leaf' are beautiful and touching short stories. You can also read 'Jane Eyre ' By Charlotte Bronte. It is really good. I never felt like reading 'Rebecca' by Daphne Du Maurier after that.

I have The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volumess 1 and 2; I don't have them seperately. I am interested in reading them though. I could do them that way though if you prefere it.

I have the complete collection on my Kindle but it has them separated in order they were published so I have just been making my way through slowly. I will gladly read any of them. Vol 1 probably starts with the first novels A Study in Scarlet. I would be willing to re-read it if you would like to start from the beginning.
If you ever watched Sherlock the first episode of season 1 was this story. I was reading these to my son when he was 1 because he loved the voices I did for the characters. Sherlock Holmes was his bedtime stories.

You're welcome, Holly!
I might be mistaken, but yeah, I do think that Atlas Shrugged would qualify..
:)

My favorite Holmes is Hound of the Baskervilles, I have not read Valley of Fear.

I really liked Hound of the Baskervilles also, but I think tied with that is The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Out of the collections I have read there are a lot of great stories in that. I still have to read Valley of Fear myself.
Some of my favorite classicsA Tale of Two Cities
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Scarlet Letter
The Color Purple
The Red Badge of Courage
White Fang
Beowulf
I love the Scarlet letter Lee and White Fang! My mom loved Jack London. I think she read everyone of his works. I bought "The Unabridged Jack London" In memory of my mom. I got it for $8 at our UBS. It has all of his works in it. I have not yet had a chance to read through all of them, but one of these days I will. White Fang sounds like a great Classic to read.

I'm sorry. I should have phrased that better. "Into the Wild" is by Jon Krakauer. If you haven't read it I beseech you to do so immediately, lol. Haha
