Helen This book relies on shock value to advance its plot. Never have I been so happy to see a novel end. Events occur just to cause the reader to recoil. Pure random events happen because they're brutal. o'Brien does understand that shock value should be administered with a light hand. I hereby sentence this book to fictional hell.

Rebecca I agree it seems like the whole "we want your ovaries" thing was put in for pure shock value. I don't even think their thought process makes sense on that one. I understand Gaia has this rare hemophilia repellent gene but how exactly is making a ton of babies from her genes going to solve the Hemophilia problem for the society as a whole? It was said only the rich would have access to these babies so it seems like the society would still be plagued by hemophilia unless they started diversifying the population by getting with the Sylum refugees like originally stated in the second book. It just doesn't add up.
