C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) Writing Competition, November 2012

Topic: Ghosts and Spirits

Word Count: 2,000

Competition Due Date: November 30, 2012

Hello All! Carolyn here, writing competition moderator. In honor of Halloween, the competition this month will be about ghosts and spirits! The minimum word count is 1,500 words and the maximum amount of words is 2,000. This is just to be a short-story. (if you use Microsoft Word, the word count is tallied in the bottom left-hand corner, if that helps). You can copy/paste into the folder when you're done.

The topic of ghosts and spirits can vary any way you'd like. Anything from haunted houses to people who can speak to the dead. You decide. It’s your baby. Be creative and as original as you can!

Also, please be cognizant of your grammar and spelling. We do not expect perfect, professional, polished work by any means - this is an amateur writing competition afterall; however, it never hurts to have someone look over your story before you submit it. A great story can be ruined by spelling and grammar errors that can make it look immature or hard to understand. Creativity is the key here, though.

For your submission, make sure you put your name and the name of your story at the top of the page, and put your story in the “November Writing Competition” folder only – NOT this one.

As far as prizes go, they are as follows:
1st - $10 Amazon gift card
2nd - $5 Amazon gift card
3rd – A spooky bookmark

Use the November Competition folder ONLY for submissions. Please keep comments to a minimum.

Okay, folks, let’s get to writing! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!!

Ray Daley Query - is there any ruling on using strong language or actual swearing?

message 3: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) Nope. Knock yourself out ;)

message 4: by Ray (new)

Ray Daley Cool, well mine's up. Initially I wasn't going to enter (at all) as the only idea I had was based around the bartender from "The Shining". I was having a root about some flash sites and saw this title and was suddenly inspired and wrote my piece in 1 go.

As per usual I've done my regular sideways approach. Hope you like it.

message 5: by James (new)

James Loftus | 1 comments Looking forward to reading your take on The Shining. Let me know where I can see it? By the way, great art, The Shining, both film and the book. "Johnie's home ..."

message 6: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) It's in the November Competition folder, James!

Is anyone else going to enter? We had 15 entries in July and now none! I hope everyone's just busy and not discouraged. I really enjoy reading everyone's stories!

message 7: by Jhada (new)

Jhada Addams (ninjacooter) | 4 comments I have a 1000 word story that would be perfect - but it's only 1000 words :(

message 8: by Walter (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) I've written one, but I'll be going through it at least once more to tweak, buff and polish it. It's also a bit long, close to 2200 words, so it's also in need of an edit to get it under 2000.

I think it should be fine. but you might want Carolyn to confirm ( or deny) it.

message 10: by Ray (new)

Ray Daley My "Shining" related story was just a mooted idea that I had, it was abandoned due to the fact I didn't really know enough about the character or location to make very much of it. I think this was the only place it's even written down, even in idea form.

message 11: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) Jhada, its 1500 to 2000 words so if you can dig down deep for another 500 words, go for it! I know you can do it. Put your headphones on and start typing! :)

Walter, 2200 is fine, no worries there :)

message 12: by Walter (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) Okay, it's up now. Hope everyone enjoys. :)

message 13: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Nacole (brandynacole) Just added a story to the November Comp, Haunted Truth. I hope everyone enjoys it.

message 14: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) Thank you, Walter and Brandy!

C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) Hey, y'all!

I have made the decision to extend the writing competition for one more week. I will be sending out a message to everyone encouraging participation.

Perhaps everyone is just busy with the holidays coming up, but I'd still like a few more submissions for this month.

I think I'm going to shake things up for January. Adele and I are in talks about perhaps bringing in a guest judge and maybe throwing some poetry into the mix.

If anyone has any suggestions or if there are parts of the competition (rules, moderators, etc) which are keeping people from submitting, PLEASE let us know! We'd like this to not only be competetive, but FUN!

message 16: by Jenelle (new)

Jenelle Thanks for extending the deadline! I've been wanting to enter, but November was so crazy I didn't think I'd get the chance. Hopefully I'll make it in time now!

message 17: by Jenelle (new)

Jenelle P.S. I like the idea of adding a poetry section.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I just cannot enter. I'm line-reading my novel at the moment. Sorry...

That's OK Lynne, maybe next time!

Adele,

I've just written my story. Where do I put it?

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

"Adele,

I've just written my story. Where do I put it?" I decided that I needed a break from my editing. I can't do the digging in the garden as it's raining and so...

message 22: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Pinard (cjpinard) Hi Lynne, you can put it in the November Folder (hopefully this link works): http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Thank you!

And thank you for your submission, Jenelle! I can't wait to read all the stories :)
