After defeating Cleopatra and descending down from the circle of Lust, Dante journeys to the next circle, one populated by gluttonous demons, great landscapes made of living organs, storms and mud of human waste, and giant gorger worms with insatiable appetites. In this circle are punished those who over-indulged in food, drink and addictions in the world above, forced to slosh around forever in the vile muck. There he must face the "great worm", Cerberus, a mass of worm-like stomach with three heads protruding from an open maw.
Continuing on to Greed, Lucifer stops Dante in the Hall of Gluttons, an area where the high status gluttons are eternally eaten by demons, and where "up" could mean any direction, so Lucifer can frustrate Dante.
Cerberus
Cerberus is the three-headed hellhound who guards the third circle of Hell, Gluttony. He is both the Ruler of this circle and it's gateway, you have to pass through it's jaws to enter Gluttony.
Hall of Gluttons
A part of Gluttony that Lucifer designed specifically for those of royalty and high status who indulged in gluttony in life. They are constantly devoured and excreted by several Gluttons for eternity. The area is pure and clean with the exception of the Gluttons. It is a major contrast from the rain, mud, and excrement that is the rest of the Third Circle. This place is also where up can mean any direction. Lucifer makes Dante stop here on his travels in order to confuse and anger him. Once Dante exits the Hall of Gluttons, he is unable to reenter it.
Gluttons
Gluttons are enemies first encountered in the Third Circle, within the Hall of Gluttons. They are the souls that have been transformed into living embodiments of their sin, eating anything they come across. Gluttons attack by either vomiting on their foes or expelling fecal matter from their rear ends.
Gorger Worms The Glutony Worm is a huge worm-like beast that burrows into the landscape of filth. They feast on the souls that are trapped in the circle with them. They rip apart carcasses and corpses that litter the ground. If an unwary victim moves close to its burrow, it instantly rises up and attempts to devour it.
