Vi | 2809 comments Sorry it's late! I didn't even realize it was November :( :(

So what have you read, currently reading, or about to read in October? How are they?

Also, how's your progress for the 2012 GR Reading Challenge if you are doing it?

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 409 comments started Taking a Shot (Play by Play, #3) by Jaci Burton and then Riding Wild (Wild Riders, #1) by Jaci Burton came in from the library. need to get this one read and returned, but i'm already in to Taking a Shot. i'm not good at reading more than one book at a time unless its a classic and something else so i'll just have to make do.

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading Eleven on Top (Stephanie Plum, #11) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich this morning. Stephanie's adventures still make me laugh after 11 novels. There are so many hilarious and witty scenes in this book. But I have to admit I was a bit annoyed by Stephanie in this book. I just wish she'd finally choose between Joe Morelli and Ranger!

Sarah Yoffa (webbiegrrlwriter) | 11 comments I just started reviewing so this month, I'm reading my first official review read (from an author friend who gave me the book over a year ago!), Tracking Shadows (Shadows of Justice, #4) by Regan Black by Regan Black. I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying this. Why "surprised"? Because it's described as a "Paranormal Romance" and just that word (paranormal) turns me right OFF usually, but I am loving this book. I also confess, I had started to assume that all of my Indie Author colleagues were lazy about editing and crappy writers. Regan has redeemed our breed! So she and I are two (LOL) but my polish is a result of being a compulsive perfectionist. I think Regan just has a naturally polished writing voice.

I'm also reading the entire Vorkosigan Saga again for the 7th time so as to "lead up to" reading the latest release Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold , which I read in the pre-release eARC form last spring (see my initial review here). My pre-ordered hardcover just got delivered this week so I'm looking forward to seeing what, if anything, changed from pre-release to final. I'll edit my review once I've read the hardcover version.

Appropriately for this group, I'm "up to" Komarr (Vorkosigan Saga, #11) by Lois McMaster Bujold on the series re-read. I say appropriately because this is the first of the 3 books bundled in the ominibus Miles in Love and all 3 are romantic SF stories in some of the most endearing ways.

Gonna be a while on that though b/c I promised myself I would do the official reading and reviewing before I "reward" myself with more Vor books.

message 27: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton by Kate Morton today. I thought it was beautifully written with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. It was obviously very well researched - I loved the WW2 bits. Those scenes were so vivid that I felt I was actually there! I found the pace of the novel, especially in the first half, to be rather slow. I thought the author spent too much time describing the various settings in the novel. It got really tiresome in places but the pace does pick up again in the second half. I loved the ending! The twist at the end completely surprised me. I wasn't expecting that! I'm usually quite good at predicting what's going to happen next in novels but that twist was a huge surprise!

message 32: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading Like Dandelion Dust by Karen Kingsbury by Karen Kingsbury last night and I really disappointed with it. The plot was very predictable, irritatingly repetitive, contrived and not very well-written. The concept of the story was interesting but the author is not a good enough writer to pull it off. This novel was simply too formulaic, too sweet, too predictable, too simplistic, too everything I don't like. The entire novel had that 'la-la-land' feel to it.

message 42: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Tenderness Of Wolves by Stef Penney by Stef Penney this evening. Overall, I thought the novel was an interesting and mostly enjoyable read. There were some problems with it (not surprising in a debut novel), the plot became slow and tedious at times, there were too many characters - it was very hard to keep track of them all - and the author wrote all of her characters in the first person so sometimes it wasn't clear which character was doing the talking! I had to go back and re-read multiple chapters to figure out what was happening in the story, which was very annoying! The ending was very sudden. It came out of nowhere and it left too many storylines unresolved. I was left wondering WHERE is the rest of the story???

Next I'm going to start The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton by S.E. Hinton.
