When you write the quote, state the book and say why you like the quote.

"Human nature is so well disposed towards those who are in interesting situations, that a young person, who either marries or dies, is sure of being kindly spoken of." EmmaThis is so true from my experiences. When a young persons dies, no matter how criminally minded he/she may have been, the eulogies are usually full of praise for that person. Similarly, when a young couple is set to marry, alot of interest is shown.
Great thread idea! So true about that one! So many of Austen's quotes are still so true today... Now which shall I post first...
This one from persuasion when they are discussing how love differs between the sexes.
"Men have had every advantage of us in telling their own story. Education has been theirs in so much higher a degree; the pen has been in their hands. I will not allow books to prove anything."
This may not be as true now (contradicting what I had said before ;) ) but it was so true! Talking about the inconstant feelings of woman described in books, and yet the books are written by men mainly then. Anne hits is right on the head in this conversation (important conversation as well !! :D)

And this from Pride and Prejudice
"Could there be finer symptoms? Is not general incivility the very essence of love?"
In my experience, when someone is in love with someone and they are both with you in company, they generally talk to no one but themselves. This quote is so true and true today.

Ha, this is a quote that is ideal to defend the stance that men controlled the pen in the 18th century. That is why history is often broken down as HIS STORY.

I wonder if I have ever down that :D
"All have been, or at least all have believed themselves to be, in danger from the pursuit of someone whom they wished to avoid; and all have been anxious for the attention of someone whom they wished to please." Northanger Abbey I like this quote because I have lived it.
That's great! Haha
Also from NA
"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid."
Because I agree with it;)

I agree to Soph. Everyone should take pleasure in a good novel (they are all that and a bag of chips: I wonder who invented that phrase)
What a good thread :)Here's one of my favourites:
"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book!"
- Caroline Bingley, P&P (probably her best line).
Here's another about books:"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid." - Henry Tilney :)
Ha, Mr. Tilney, I love a man who loves his books :P Therefore, I favour that quote, although it may be subjective, haha
One of my favorites - I even have it on my profile page in the quotes section is from P & P, "You have delighted us long enough." There are so many reasons that I love that quote - first of all, it just plain cracks me up! Also, I tend to be very sarcastic myself and I can see myself saying something like that to someone and having them look at me blankly - which would also crack me up knowing that they just didn't get it. I work in Human Resources at the day job and so many people complain and whine to you all day...you really long to say something like this sometimes. :) It may sound harsh but trust me... I'm thinking of writing a book on all of the ridiculous things that people say and do in my office!
Oh, I like that quote Chasta, simply for the sarcasm part. I am a sarcastic girlie, sometimes folks think I am mean when they do not understand. *oh well* :D.
"I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."
Pride and prejudice
This just sums up Darcy's change in feelings and how it happened so well - he gets it completely right! and it is such a sweet line!

lolz
Another of my favourites - I have a mug with this quote:"Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can."
Elizabeth in P&P.
I like it as a stand-alone quote, because it's a good philosophy about life... I also like it in the novel as it demonstrates Lizzie's character to Darcy, and shows that she's not afraid of him, or Caroline, or their so-called superiority; she is speaking her mind, not afraid to be honest or open.
This one from Emma is very true!
"Vanity working on a weak head, produces every sort of mischief."
As is this one from persuasion...
"One man's ways may be as good as another's, but we all like our own best."

Thats where some of these come from. And there is another app to do with JA :) worth downloading as well!
This one from persuasion because I completely agree with it.
"My idea of good company, Mr Elliot, is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company."
That is also my idea of good company!

That is also my idea of good company!
This one was my 'quote of the day' on the JA centre app today, made me smile:"My being charming, Harriet, is not quite enough to induce me to marry; I must find other people charming -- one other person at least."
'Emma' by Jane Austen

I love Emma :-) . . .
Here's today's quote of the day:"Selfishness must always be forgiven, you know, because there is no hope of a cure." 'Mansfield Park' - Jane Austen
Soph: :-)
I get a little alert on my phone with a new one each day :)Someone sent me this on Twitter today: woooohoooo! A fellow Janeite!!!
Then an image that says
"If a book is well written, I always find it too short." - Jane Austen.
Another good one!
There are people, who the more you do for them, the less they will do for themselves.
Emma, a lot of truth there!!

That is such a suitable quote today in regards to charity. Sometimes people do not want to give because they worry about whether will take the rope and get off their feet or continue receiving charity when they are now able.
"I shall offer to pay him tomorrow: he will rant and storm about his love for you, and there will be an end of the matter."Mr. Benett in P&P. Just about anything Mr. B says is hilarious. Try to picture Mr. D 'rant and storm' about anything. Yet it's the perfect discription for those in the throes of love.
That's a great one! Haha love Mr Bennet! And what he says there is probably true! He would never accept payment!
Love the Mr B quote! My quote of the day app has this lovely one:
"A man does not recover from such a devotion of the heart to such a woman! He ought not; he does not."
'Persuasion' by Jane Austen
:D ha, Persuasion may not seem romantic like the more popular Austen novels but there are some deep heart in there, erhem...
