Let me start off by saying that this is an ADVANCED roleplay. For those unfamiliar with how D&D works can still join and take place, as we're not going to be playing as if it's a board game; otherwise, I'd have to make everyone get a whole bunch of special dice and post everything they roll in real life into the group, and that would drive away almost every single member, if not all of them, within a matter of posts. What I mean by Advanced is that there is a lot of history, lore, information, and regulations that go into this kind of roleplay. The way the roleplay will work out will be similar to the D&D-type style of roleplaying, where your characters go through adventures and actually buy or find gear, etc., etc., and aren't going to be all-powerful. There are also certain progressions and developments within characters that would be easier to understand if you've played D&D or D&D affiliated games before, but can be easily learned and understood by members who haven't, but are still complex and are required to be followed. Therefore, I caution new members to be wary of how this group works; especially if you're unfamiliar with how D&D works.
Now then, on to the information.
Considering the complete history of the Forgotten Realms is too large to post in an efficient manner, I will just sum it up as best as I can, based on the specifics that this group will be based around.
First, I will give you the non-roleplay specific information that will give some insight to members of this group.
The Forgotten Realms is the name given to the world of Abeir-Toril the other worlds that exist in the universe by the fans of the famous and extremely popular board game called Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons, or D&D, as it's often referred to as, was the first roleplaying game (RPG) that made the biggest impact on how today's games are made. D&D single-handedly set the majority of aspects for today's games by defining aspects from what kinds of spells exist to how hit ratings and damage are calculated. Several books and games have been made that are based around the Forgotten Realms and help add to the history, lore, and other information about the Forgotten Realms that give insight to readers and gamers about the large world of which the Forgotten Realms and its characters exist.
Now for the roleplay specific information regarding the Forgotten Realms. Since Abeir-Toril is so large in itself, this group will be focused around the most significant of its continents--Faerûn. [Note: even I do not know everything there is to know about the Forgotten Realms and, since I am not copy/pasting this information (save the Creator Races*), not all information may be exact, and I am welcome to corrections by people who know more than I do on the subject.]
The planet of Abeir-Toril is the planet of origin for the Human race and several other races. The most significant regions of Abeir-Toril is the center-most continent of Faerûn. It is here that many of the most famous people of Abeir-Toril reside today and where many of the greatest adventures take place. During the first age of Abeir-Toril, the first races, known as the five Creator Races, were the dominant species, each taking their turn in ruling during the era known as the Days of Thunder.
*The five Creator Races were the Sarrukh--reptilian humanoids--(creators of the yuan-ti, naga, lizardfolk, and scalykind), the Batrachi--amphibian humanoids--(known as amphibioids, and the creators of the bullywugs, doppelgangers, kopru, kuo-toa, locothah, sivs, tako and other shape-shifting, amphibious, or piscine races), the Aearee--bird-like humanoids--(known as avians, and creators of the aaracokra, kenku, and other birdlike humanoids), the Fey--nature/fairy-type humanoids--(known as sylvans, and creators of korreds, sprites, and pixies) and Humans. Though they are not listed as a Creator Race, the Dragons are also one of the first beings to exist on Abeir-Toril.
Following the Days of Thunder era, the Dawning Age began the uprising of the slave races that the Creator Races created--races that weren’t up to the standards of Creator Races--started to take place and is also the era where the Dragons began to take interest in the lesser beings, who were the slave races, as well as the Humans, and began to lend their aid in the war against the Creator Races. This is the era that the Creator Races’ dominance began to decline. The era of which the Creator Races’ dominance was all but extinct was known as the First Flowering. The First Flowering era is the era of which the Elves separated into five major factions and kingdoms. During the era, it is believed that the Batrachi are extinct, having died off from the war with the slave races. After that era is the era known as the Crown Wars, in which the five Elven kingdoms and factions fought for the sole leadership of the Elven race. By this time, it is believed that the Aearee have completely left the world of Abeir-Toril . With the decline of the Elven kingdoms came the era known as The Founding Time, where the Dwarves began their rise to power and their kingdoms ruled over Abeir-Toril. It wasn't until after each race took their turn ruling Abeir-Toril and after the age known as the Time of the Dragons passed and the Elven and Dwarven kingdoms fell and/or declined that the era known as the Age of Humanity took place and the Human race took their turn as the dominant species of Abeir-Toril. With the rise of the Human race to power, we arrive at the present day. During this era, many of the Elves and Dwarves have pledged allegiance to the Human kingdoms through what is known as the Lords’ Alliance. Though the Human race is now the dominant power of Abeir-Toril the Sarrukh and the Fey still exist. While the Fey are more peaceful by nature, both they and the Sarrukh still plot to seize control over Abeir-Toril from the Human race and their allies. With the present day era, the Human race has split into many kingdoms which spread all throughout Abeir-Toril. The most famous of kingdoms reside on the eastern coast of Faerûn, known as the Sword Coast.
This is a brief summary of the eras and ages of Abeir-Toril and more specifically Faerûn and gives a little bit of information on the major races of the world. While the other minor races have also had a big impact on Faerûn, such as the wars between the spiders and the wars between the Orcs and Goblins, the information regarding such events would be too long to put into an efficient post. I may decide later to add in more information regarding the complete history of Abeir-Toril, but, right now, this information will suffice on the basic information people would need to know about the Forgotten Realms. For those who would also want more information regarding locations and areas throughout Faerûn, the group picture is the map of Faerûn and can be accessed through the Photos page of the group.
