Ms. Simek | 2 comments Today, as a tool to practice chunking and get to know our writer, Sherman Alexie, better, we read the essay "Superman and Me." For those of you who are not familiar with the Superman comic book series, Superman is a hero from the planet Krypton who poses as a human named Clark Kent. He works hard to protect the city Metropolis, the nation, and the world from any and all forces of evil.

Why does Alexie title his piece “Superman and Me”? Consider in what ways he is like Superman. While this does not need to be in formal reading response structure, I would like a MINIMUM of two examples from the essay that prove your ideas.

Matthew | 11 comments I think the author, Sherman Alexie, titled his piece "Superman and Me" because he first read Superman when he was three years old and that's what made him who he is now. He is like superman because he went through a lot of rough times with his parents and being bullied at school and that made him a strong person. Another way is he stood out amongst all the other Indian kids just like superman with his powers.

One example that proves my point is in the article Alexie says that a smart Indian is a dangerous person and widely feared. Superman was feared by vilians just like how Alexie was by his classmates.

Another example, is that Alexie refused to fail. He was smart, arrogant and lucky. Superman had to be those as well to become a superhero.

My last example is that Alexie is a writer and visits schools to encourage kids and as he says trying to save lives. Superman was protective and saved people from vilians.

Ben Friedman | 7 comments Alexie is a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian born and raised in the Spokane Indian Reservation in WellPoint, Washington. His father held various jobs, including truck driver and logger and his mother was a social worker. Alexie was born hydrocephalic and underwent a brain operation at the age of 6 months, but was not expected to survive. When he did live, doctors predicted he would live with severe mental retardation. Although spared this, he did suffer through seizures and bed-wetting throughout his childhood. Preferring to stay inside, he developed a love for reading.
Sherman Alexia once wrote a very powerful and touching easy once about his life and what is was like growing up. The title of this piece is “Superman and I.” I feel although this piece was named what is for the following reasons. One reason I feel it was named this because. Superman has one weakness and it is kryptonite and that is the only thing that can stop him. This is in reference with Sherman because he is doing everything he can in life to succeed and there are only a few things holding him back in life.
Another reason why it may be called “Superman and Me.” Is known one knows who superman is unless he is in costume. He has to been seen to be reveled. Just like Sherman when he was younger knows one could believe the amount of knowledge he retained unless he reveled his true colors.

Jack Brill | 12 comments I think the reason why alexie named his piece "superman and me" is because I think he thinks he is better now than the old him and he has improved in life socially and he relates to the other story by both kids having alcoholic dad's and moving to new places and they both struggled being the new kid in the school.

Sherman Alexie is a wonderful author writing many stories about his life and one of his short stories is named, "Superman and Me." Every author names a story for a reason and I think Alexie named his story about Superman because of the things he does. Alexie explains in the story that he was the chosen special one and soon became a famous writer. Arnold in the story was different from other kids in his reservation, he was smarter and more hopeful. He read tons of hard books. When he was small at the age of 3, he read the Superman comic books. As he grew up, he went through tons of pain. Still, he suffered through it and made it to be a famous writer and also trying to change his reservation kids to be smarter like him. Similar to Superman, Arnold and him also each fight through the evil and became heroes to help others. Arnold had to read more books to be the hero of being a famous writer and helping others at the reservation. Superman also did the same, but helped a town by keeping evil away. Alexie titled the piece "Superman and Me" because he was very similar to Superman.

Kailey | 7 comments In the realistic fiction book ATD book written by Sherman Alexie He probably named the piece "Superman and me" because he learned how to read from a superman comic. Alexie probably felt like he was inthe comic whenhe was three and learned how to read. Also, his first book created him and transformed into the person he is today. Not to forget, his father loved books and since he loved his father he decided he wanted to love books too.

Monica | 14 comments "Superman and me" is a fabulous story based on Sherman Alexie's childhood. Every title in the world represents something and so does this one. But comparing to other stories, this story holds a very symbiotic thing. Why did Sherman Alexie name this story "Superman and me?" He could have called it many other names. In this title, I have discovered many meanings. One example is that, in this short story, Sherman Alexie's life has gone through many disarrangements. Being an Indian is not easy. He was very smart and smart Indians were considered dangerous. But still, Sherman did not give up. He continued reading books everywhere he goes and soon became a writer. The word Superman us referring to his heart. His heart never broke and it was whole throughtout his whole life. Another example is that Superman actually had a lot in common with Sherman. Superman at first faced lots of obstacles but with the help of his confidence and determination, he finally battled the enemies all my himself. In conclusion, Sherman is very alike in personality with Superman. "Superman and me" is a very appropriate title.

Essam Alhumoz | 7 comments "Superman and Me" is a touching story based on Sherman Alexis's Youth. This title represents something very special that would compare Sherman Alexie to Superman. The comparison is the reason Sherman Alexie named the title because he wanted to have a reason to name it "Superman and Me". Sherman Alexie had very rough childhood as stated in the story. Sherman Alexie is a Native American which was a very hard role for him to play because of most of the stereotypes on the world. Sherman Alexie faced many obstacles in his life but his confidence and determination is what made him what he is today and because of those obstacles that he faced makes him an amazing writer/poet. Sherman Alexie is not shellfish instead of just living his dream and being big and famous he actually goes to visit Native american schools where he teaches Native Americans that if they are confident they can achieve they're dreams as well. Sherman Alexie is compared to Superman because of all of saving the Native American Children, just like Superman saves the world from villains. "Superman and Me" makes a very appropriate title for this story.

Steven Lin | 8 comments I think the author, Sherman Alexie, titled his piece "Superman and Me" because he was acting like superman. He was trying to save every one on the rez. Just like superman, Sherman Alexie where both treated like a different person. They where both different from the rest of the people. Sherman Alexie was smart and because of that he was odd and seemed like a outcast from the rest of the people in the rez. Supper man and Sherman Alexie both had the same goal, It was to save people. Sherman Alexie knew that he was different from the other people from the rez, but he accepted the differences that he had and used it for good, just like superman.

Sara | 3 comments In the passage "Superman and Me" based on Sherman Alexie when he was a child, the reason why its called "Superman and Me" is because Sherman Alexie would read superman comic books when he was a child. The reason why he's like superman is because he always liked to teach others on how to do things and would help them on what they wanna learn if they can't do something. One example is that Sherman Alexie would teach young kids how to read and write since most of them didn't know how too so they learned how to read and write since Sherman Alexie started to teach little kids. The second example is that since his sister wrote romance stories he might of got inspired from her and thought to try to start writing some of his own storie's also because his dad loved to read book's and so did Sherman Alexie.

Superman and Me
In Sherman Alexie, “Superman and Me.” The author writes about how reading Superman comic book will turn him into an amazing reader. He though about paragraphs and how the groups of words had meaning. He learned to read to read faster then all of Indian classmates. This gave him the “Super Power” to be better then all of the others. He never gave up on expanding his knowledge despite the fact he lived on a Native American reservation. Superman was able to brake down doors and take risks in life. Sherman had to brake down stereotypes in life in order to succeed as well. This took a lot of strength and power to do what he did. Superman had to fight the villains and Sherman had to fight against the odds and the negative in his life.
Now I understand why the story is called “Superman and Me.” It called this because both Superman and Sherman had to fight to succeed they both had to have resilient will power to beat the odds and come out on top. They both had to defeat their own villains.
