In honor of our discussion of literary allusions and making connections, I would like you to describe a connection that you can make with your independent reading book to ONE of the following: 1.) yourself; 2.) another text/film/song/television program/etc; 3.) the world.

Please consult your rubric and models to ensure that you are doing your best work!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about (1-3 sentences)
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea that is properly introduced and punctuated (Arnold states, ".....")?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea (2-4 sentences)?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Bryan | 41 comments In Cynthia Kadohata's realistic fiction novel Kira-Kira, I would think that Katie and I have one thing in commend with one another. Young Katie Takeshima describes everything she likes as "Kira-Kira" like I say everything that I like as "fine". She and I describes the world as two wonderful things, and we have people in our lives that teaches us these types of things. "When Lynne became very ill, and the whole family started falling apart it was up to Katie to show them how much Kira-Kira their future is." This shows that she and I are similar because we can help out our family and show them about how bright their future is.

Sydney Mok (SydneyMok) | 43 comments In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time by Mark Haddon, a connection I would make to this novel is to a book called The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. These two books are related because they are both about someone important in their lives missing. In the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time the protagonist Chris finds out that his mother isn't actually dead. He is 15 years old and his father lied to him when he told him that she died. The truth is, Chris' mom had an affair with Chris' neighbor Mr.Shears. They moved and got married afterwards. When Chris found out, he couldn't believe that his dad lied to him for all these years. Since Chris wants to leave, his father is really sorry and shocked. He didn't know what to say to Chris except that he is sorry. Chris' dad says "It's bloody hard to tell the truth all the time. Sometimes it's impossible. And I want you to know that I'm trying, I really am" (120). This quote shows that Chris' dad is trying to tell him that it's hard to tell the truth because it hurt him to much and he couldn't believe it but he is really sorry for lying to him. after Chris secretly left, Chris' dad went looking for him and when he found him he misses him and he is really sorry and wants him back. In The Lovely Bones, the protagonist a 14 year girl Susie was murdered and can see everyone in her family and how life is doing. Her father suspects that their neighbor Mr.Harvey killed Susie which is true. Her father is always worrying about Susie and wants to take revenge badly on Mr.Harvey and gets in trouble. For many years, he still can't except the fact that Susie is dead. He misses her and would do anything for revenge on Mr.Harvey. This shows that both books are related because they both have a character that misses someone.

Karen (allergic2haters) | 37 comments Just as Long as We're Together by Judy Blume
In Judy Blume's realistic fiction Just As Long As We're Together ,Stephanie, a connection I would make would be my life. When I was in the First Grade in a new classroom when I had friends in different classrooms. When Allison was new to school and had no friends. Until I saw these two girls talking to each other. They saw me looking at weird and all that types of stuff. Like when Stephanie reacted when she saw Allison looked weird looking. They walked towards me and said "Hi my name is Melanie and she is Andrea." There was a part when Stephanie said Hi to Allison. They asked me to sit at their table and chat. Stephanie chatted with Allison. After the first day we became friends. Later on Rachel and Stephanie became useful for Allison and became friends with her. "Hi. Hi I'm Allison....Rachel gave me one of her skeptical looks then said, Well...I think we should try to help her get adjusted here. I think we should try to be her friends. I think so, too, I said." This quote shows that Allison and I made friends in different grades but we made true friends in life. Therefore, Allison made true friends as the same way as I did when I was in First grade.

Andy Chen | 44 comments In Rick Riordan's fantasy novel, The Sea of Monsters, a connection I would make would be a T.V. episode of Ben 10. Percy is a 16 year old who's goal is mainly to fight Kronos and whoever fought him during a journey to an adventure. Related to Ben, he is a 10 year old who could turn into types of monsters and fight against other villains(monsters),who fought him/were after him during a journey on a quest. Like Percy, Ben is a boy who is the protagonist who rescues others who were captured by monsters. Unlike Percy, Ben has a watch, which is called a Deluxe Omnitrix Touch Watch, which transforms him into a type of monster by which monster he chooses to transform into. And Percy, he has a riptide, which is his defender and fight against others. Both, Ben and Percy fights against creatures and monsters who tries to sabotage good people from what they do, mainly to prevent them from making villains evacuate from the world. Percy once stated,"I am the chosen one. I am to help you Gods and Goddesses, whom you assigned to complete quests. From this day, I will help every one of our good half bloods from evil titans that are after us," I said. I needed to fight against Lord Kronos, Luke and others who are hurting us. Since being selected as the Chosen One, I'm willing to help my friends and strangers be protected from those evil monsters." This quote shows that Ben and Percy makes a good connection because they both save their sidekicks and friends from each and every one of the antagonist who try to defeat the good ones and rule the world. Therefore, Ben 10 is the connection I would make with this book.

Elizabeth Sanchez | 14 comments In the book by an anonymous author, Go Ask Alice I can make a connection to a song with this novel. The song I can connect this book to is Under Pressure by Queen. In this realistic fiction novel the main character may not realize it but in some sort of way because she has always wanted to be apart of this certain crowd, if they do drugs, she's going to want to stay apart of that group by doing it as well. So, she was pressured onto doing drugs regardless. "Pressure pushing down on me pressing down on you no man ask for under pressure that burns a building down splits a family in two puts people on streets." These lyrics shows the effect of being under pressure."Oh, how did I ever get mixed up in such a mess."(45)This quote shows the after affect of being under pressure. In the novel Go Ask Alice, at the end result she dealt with the consequences of being pressured onto doing drugs she starts to feel guilty about it which cause her to feel sick and not being able to sleep for various nights.

Jamilah B | 37 comments In the novel The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, I would connect this book to the world because in the book, there's a girl name Susie who becomes missing and she ends up being killed. I would connect this to world because there are many kids in the world who get missing and killed for no reason. In the book, it states that Susie went with her neighbor into a secret place nd she was later slaughtered. "Tell me you love me,He said.Gently i did.The end came anyway." This quote shows that Susie was murdered even when she did what she was told. Many innocent kids and adults get killed and missing everyday. So therefore the world is the best connection to the book The Lovely Bones.

Wesley | 50 comments In Christopher Paolini's Fantasy novel, Eragon, a connection I would make with Eragon is Ben10. Eragon is 15 years old traveling to the Varden, one of the rebels of Galbatorix. Eragon being the only rider who can over throw the king needs to defeat him for the good of the common people. Ben 10 is also the one one of the bearers of the omnitrix. The omnitrix is a watch that lets Ben transform into a monster. Like Eragon he needs to save the common people from Vilgax. The quote , "...what he had accomplished was worthy of honor, of recognition. No matter what his trials might be in the future, he was no longer a pawn in the game of power. He had transcended that and was something else, something more." he says this becasue he has now become a hero just like Ben10 when he defeated his enemy. Eragon just defeated a minor enemy in his book he accomplished the task. Therefore Ben10 is a connection to Eragon.

Aaron | 29 comments In Philip Reeve's science fiction novel Fever Crumb one conection I would belive is my main character Fever and Katnis from The Hunger Games. I think these two girls have a conection with each other because Fever ia brave, honest, and reliable just like Katnis. "I will risk anything to save Dr.Crumb"(83) This quote means that when Katnis never gave up to save her friend Peeta just like Fever when Dr.Crumb got captured she never gave up looking for him. Therefore I belive that Katnis would be a conection to Fever.

Ilijah A | 40 comments In Kate Carys novel "Bloodline", I can make a connection with this book to a movie Dracula. I can compare the two because in the book, John Shaw, a a nineteen-year-old, who is in the British Army who works as a communication officer who translates German radio feeds and translates what he knows goes to Dracula castle. I compared the two also because in Dracula there is Dracula's castle and in Bloodline they go to Dracula's castle. In conclusion I connected the book "Bloodline" to the movie Dracula because in both the book and movie, they mention Dracula's castle

Kenjo | 41 comments In Ian o'Connor's biography, "The Journey Of Derek Jeter," a connection I would make with Derek Jeter is the world. Derek Jeter is young star who plays for the New York Yankees at shortstop. He grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan with dozens of Yankees clothing and posters in his room. He wanted to play for the Yankees when he grew up. His mom had stated, "Derek would always want to toss around a baseball while his friends were playing." This quote shows that a connection can be made about Derek Jeter to the world because there are thousands of kids in the world who have big dreams of becoming a professional player whether it's basketball, football or baseball. Many kids, have a special team or player they are a big fan of and want to grow up to play on the team, just like Jeter was a big fan of the Yankees obviously.

Yamil Cifuentes | 40 comments In R.L. Stines's Realistic fiction "Attack of the mutant", I can make a connection with this book to a t.v. show call Regular Show. I made a connection with these two because in "Attack of the mutant" a boy think a comic book character came to life. And in Regular Show, after Mordecai accidentally killed his uncle and Mordecai think he came back to life. They both say, "it's not real, it's not real, it's just your imagination." This quote shows that they don't know what's happening and they can't think. In conclusion, I connected these two because they know somebody or something came back to life.

Altamir III III (longdeoking) | 27 comments In Sharon Drapers realistic fiction novel, Tears of a Tiger, a connection I would make to my book is to the victims of the world. I say this, or what I mean by this is that he was one of many that suffered by something very sad and disturbing and from that, the person kills himself. This book is about a 17 year old boy named Andy Jackson and he smashed the car on the wall and killed his best friend Robbie Washington. From that, he kept saying that he was guilty for what happen and he would never forgive himself, and then it kept boiling up inside of him and next you know, he kept saying "I'm sorry for all I've done-so sorry,... so very, very sor-"(165), and then...BOOM, he shot himself on the head with his fathers rifle and dies. That was a very sad part of the book and that is one thing that happens he on today's world. So that is why I connect this book with the victims of the world.
