Jennifer Oliver (jennifer_l_oliver) | 10 comments I recently read Shrilugh by Myndi Shafer and REALLY liked it. Its a YA but not your typical twilight-esque type stuff. Its fresh and the characters are engaging. I'm looking foward to the next one.
I'm not a big romance reader either, but CC MacKenzie's Reckless Nights in Rome was pretty good. It was the banter between the characters that really drew me in and it wasn't so wrapped up in the "love scenes" - it actually had more of a story than just "boy meets girl and they fall in love."
Um, what else have I read recently - a ton of craft books - Save the Cat, Hooked, Write it Forward... I could go on and on about those, but I'll save you the nap. ;)
Oh, yes and for something more down the line of historical fiction on a darker note, Bayou Jesus by M.G. Miller was fantastic. It wasn't my usual genre but I'd heard such good things about it so I tried it. I'm really glad I did too!

Is it okay to start a new topic for a genre that we don't see listed?

Irma Fritz | 23 comments Just published another Kindle short story, Piano Lessons. Don't you just love the cover photo by the Swiss photographer Timm Suess from his Many Faces of Decay collection? I am so grateful that he allowed me to use it for this story. Here's a quick synopsis of Piano Lessons:
A writer tells his last story, that of the tragic life of Klara Werner, as he tries to understand what happened to her during the final days of WWII. Every time he has finished a new book and worried what to write next, it was to be about Klara. With one tale spun out and the next not yet begun, hers was always the ace in the hole as he stared at the blank page. He believed a good writer writes to find his narrative. But he also suspected that every writer has such a chronicle, which he can produce when his muse fails him. And then it may have been that Klara was his muse, and after telling her story there would be nothing left to write. Perhaps this is why he saved Klara’s account till the end of her life. And the end of his. What was the truth about Klara and the men in her life?
