Urban Fantasy discussion

Okay, we are now taking suggestions for December's book of the month. I'll collect titles until Nov. 26.

Note: When you are making your suggestions, keep in mind that this is an urban fantasy group. YA is fine, but stick to UF titles (no PNR, romance, traditional fantasy, etc.)

How about Control Point by Myke Cole.. I'm planning to read that soon..

I picked this one up yesterday, and I have to admit , im attracted to the fact they are brothers :) . So this is my pick!

I would like to start the Iron Druid series and see someone elected the #5 book. I looked through the polls and didn't see Hounded picked yet, so I will nominate it.

I really like the sound of Cold Days - but would I have to read the first 13 books to enjoy this one?

I was going to nominate the first one, but I saw that it was already the BOTM in July last year, and I wasn't sure if I could.

Without a doubt, yes.

That's not a bad thing in any way though. The Dresden Files is an amazing series.

I have Jim Butcher on my TBR pile and on hold at the library. I can't wait to start reading his work because I've heard so much about it! Isn't there a TV show based on his novels?

There was but they changed so much of the basic stuff that it was pretty unwatchable. It was called the Dresden Files and only went for one season.

I've heard her stuff is a little risque. I've avoided it although I tried one of her books a long time ago. I don't remember a thing about it. May not have finished it?

Dresden started out pretty slow for me. I've never made it past the first book. I have the next in the series checked out from the library, but I'm not going to get to it before it's due...

I was pretty eh about Storm Front. It wasn't bad, but it felt like so much detail was missing. So I was a little bored with it. The only reason I kept going was because I already had books 2 and 3 as well. They definitely got much better as they went along!

The first book in the Dresden Files is Butcher's first book ever... so it's not the best. He really has grown over the years as a writer though. That's not much of an excuse because there are debut novels some seasoned writers couldn't even pull off, but... maybe a little leeway could be given because of it.


I have a great love of the series for many reasons, one of which is that it got me reading again. Before the series I'd read a couple dozen books throughout high school and that was it. After DF, I started eating books. @_@

I'll give book two a try (again) one of these days. I did start it, but it was close after the first and I just didn't really love the first all that much. It was eh. I just didn't find the character all that compelling. There's always a waiting list at the library though so it generally works out then when I have time, the books are checked out. That's exactly what happened this run. By the time it came to my name, I was/am insanely busy. I haven't read a book all month and the next few weeks aren't looking too promising either...

That's a weird phenomenon, isn't it? That some novelists have this amazing first book. I love the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee's one and only book. It's such an amazing book, especially since she was a first-time author, yet she never wrote another thing!

My suggestions are Kevin Hearne (someone mentioned Hounded). Or Rob Thurman's books (Nightlife is the first one).

I went through the polls and missed it completely but you are right. Still last month Hounded was in the running and no one complained. I wasn't a member last year so didn't know. It does look like it was voted for last July. Maybe the second book then

How about something new.. I think most of us are going to read both Hearnes and Butchers new books next month regardless.. (To those of you waiting for Trapped, there is a short-story out that covers the time between Trapped and Tricked, "Two Ravens and One Crow", i recommend it, i enjoyed it more than most of the normal novels in the series, and it deals with some of the important plot-points so it would be a shame to miss it..)

If nobody is up for Control Point, then how about The Stranger by Max Frei.. It's a russian UF series, it's also on my list for next month..

Hey, not EVERYONE loves Hearne. :>) I found the first...well, it was a DNF for me. Too much attitude for me. :>) And I'm still working on Dresden. No really! I"m going to get to book 2...

I have started a de Lint too. It was good, but for whatever reason I set it aside and haven't gotten back to it.

I'm with you on Hearne, Maria, I don't like his books.

Well, i'm actually not the biggest fan of Hearne.. I think his books are fun and fairly entertaining, but i honestly dont care about what happens in them a tenth as much as i do with the Dresden files.. I dare you to read to book 5 in that and not end up being completely absorbed by it ! :D

Yes, The sex between cousins was rather strange, but at least it was only insinuated rather than described in detail. I liked the fact the violence was not too graphic.
I thought the 2nd book was better.

Elizabeth Hunter is worth a look ... I found the first in her elemental mysteries series by accident on the Kindle free list and they are surprisingly good. Interesting characters, and a genuinely strong heroine. I liked em.

I felt a little 'crawly' about it as well, but the premise was so well founded that I got past it and in fact "Enchantment Emporium" and the sequel, "The Wild Ways" are two favorite Tanya Huff books, along with the trilogy that is the Keeper series. Those two are the only ones I've really liked/read, however, as she is one of the hit and miss authors for me.

I'm another entry in this rather limited group ... I liked the first Hearne book (although my favorite character by far was the dog!) ... didn't care much for the 2nd and the 3rd was a DNF.

And unfortunately I've never been able to get into the Dresden books much at all, finally quit trying.

DeLint is a bit on and off for me ... some of his I've liked very well, others not so much.

Yes there was TV show about The Dresden Files. It was actually pretty good. Of course not totally accurate; what shows based on books are, but fun to watch. Jim Butcher is my favorite author and I absolutely adore his series with Harry Dresden. Have FUN with it. His newest book to the series comes on on the 27th and we are all so looking forward to it. Gonna be a big book, not as big as; , which is the best book I have EVER read, and trust me when I say I have read alot of books! Looking forward to this new book. Happy Reading and get started on his series. The series picks up so much with each book. He has really grown as an author. It is fun to watch. Enjoy!!!
