30.8 - Delicious Dee/Christine US's Task - A Reading Tribute to Those We Love

For me, this time of year is really about being with those you love. This holiday season is less about gifts we might receive and more about being with those who love, appreciate and support us.

For this task you will read two books, one book from each option.

Book 1
Read a book that, in some way, reminds you of the person in your family who made the biggest impact on you. For example, my mother is a rock and has the strength of an Army - but you wouldn't be able to tell looking at her since she is a petite little thing.

Thinking of my mother, some examples for books I could read: I could read a book with a strong female character, or by an author with my mother's initials (DC),or with a main character from her state, PA.
REQUIRED: State the person in your family you choose and how this book makes you think of that person.

Book 2
Having support in your life, no matter what is going on, is important. Support your GR friends by reading one of their favorite books (4 or 5 stars) so that you can discuss with them, if they ever need someone to talk to. REQUIRED: Provide a link to your friends shelf when you post

Kathy G. | 1931 comments For option #1- My mom was born and raised in
Indiana. I wanted to read this book (set
in Indiana)- but could you approve it here.
The description doesn't say Indiana. I found
it on Wiki.

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments For option 1, does the family member have to be blood related? My best friends and I consider ourselves sisters, despite us not being actual family members. I only ask because the person who made the biggest impact in my real family is more of a "cautionary tale" rather than a positive role model, and I'm not sure that's what you're going for.

I had to think about this for a minute.

I would prefer a positive experience, yes. My point behind this task was to show how others can support when needed most, and how you can support back (even with something as simple as distracting them from a problem to put a smile on their face for a few moments). And I consider those actions to be positive & uplifting during a time of need.

So, as a result, if a friend that you consider more of a relation than some true blood-relations that will lead to a positive end story, I will go with that (I have friends that I am closer to than some actual blood-relations, so I can understand).

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 518 comments Christine, Dee, a question. For Book 1, can I read a book from the Romance genre because that's what my mum (my family member pick) always has her nose in?

message 12: by Christine US (new)

Christine US (christineus) | 579 comments Chaitra: Sounds like romance novels remind you of your mom - so that absolutely works! (just be sure to give that explanation with your post)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 82 comments Dad's initials are TP and I was wondering if I could read Sweet Nothings - Tracie Puckett for them?

message 14: by Christine US (new)

Christine US (christineus) | 579 comments Fiona: as long as the initals match, it is fine.

Dee (austhokie) | 9031 comments I think I am going to read a book where the authors first name is spelt the name as my sisters because her spelling (Johanna) is relatively unique - most of the time is it spelt Joanna or Joanne, its that damn H ;) she hates that she can't buy those personalized name things because they never spell her name right

message 17: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) For part A, could we read a book that that family member recommended?

message 18: by Christine US (new)

Christine US (christineus) | 579 comments Riona - sure. That would certainly be a reminder of them.

message 19: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) Oh good, that gives me lots of options. My dad is constantly recommending various sci-fi classics.

message 20: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda71) | 1770 comments I have tried to provide a link to my friends shelf showing the book that I read but I cannot seem to do it. I have tried to follow the instructions on the (some html is ok) but cannot seem to make it work. Do you have any suggestions that might help?

Thanks

Yes, this is the right friend. Do I need to post it to my task or has this satisfied the requirement?

message 23: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 9031 comments You need to post it with you task posting so the mods can verify

D.G. Dee - My Dad wanted to name me Johanna when I was born but my Mom didn't like it so they went with something else. :)

D.G. My Mom was a high school teacher...can I read a book set in high school or with a main character that is a high school teacher?

I've been having problems finding out what to use for this. She's not a big reader and I cannot use her initials because her last name starts with U.

I have a few books set in the DR (her homeland) but I'm not sure I'll get to them before the challenge is over.

Robin (rgage) | 191 comments I would like to read Dead Is So Last Year (Dead Is, #3) by Marlene Perez it deals with 3 sisters (which I am 1 of 3) and my middle sister is named Marlene(she is the one that I am the closest to). Will this work?

thanks

@DG - the set in a high school/featuring a HS teacher will work - just make sure to point it out in your post

@Robin - as long as you tie the reasoning back in your post, you are fine ;)

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments My mother influenced my reading choices. She died in 1990 and I inherited several shelves of books mostly classics, poetry and biographies. I'd like to read Shakespeare's Sonnets which according to her copy is 154 pages, unnumbered but I counted them. Obviously since it's poetry each page has a lot of white space. Do I have to add some more poetry to make the required limit of 100 pages?

message 32: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 9031 comments Andy - is there an ISBN or something you can find in the GR database to signify the book - because the rules state that a link to the book read needs to be included...but if it is over 100 pages, then you are good to go

message 33: by Andy (last edited Feb 17, 2013 11:30AM) (new)

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments There is no ISBn as most of my mother's books date from the 50's and older, but there is a link on Good Reads to The Sonnets of William Shakespeare. Is it OK to use that one? It appears to be over 100 pages

message 34: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 9031 comments Yes just make sure you point it out in your post
