What is the purpose of placing two men in charge of keeping an eye on someone, that are a bunch of loose screws?

Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool who trusts him? It's an imteresting concept and a fun one to play with as a writer.

I interpreted this play as a way of playing with and questioning reality. I read it for an AP Lit class, so I had to analyze it, but I nonetheless loved it. I ran with that idea and actually quite enjoyed it. And really, I think the pointlessness of it is what the point is. It's absurdism, which is a fun time.

I'm not sure that they are idiots. They are being used, by Claudius and Hamlet, in a situation that they never completely comprehend, or of which they are a part.

They are presumably flattered that they have been asked by the King to 'look after' Hamlet, without realizing that he's really asking them to spy on their friend. Hamlet understand exactly why they've been summoned and uses this.

While R&G wait for things to unfold, they are very aware that they have no control over the situation and this leads to their many conversations of the existential variety.

However, to say they are idiots or fools is pretty harsh, they just don't understand what's going on. Much of the humour of the piece is derived from this and the ultimate pathos is, that they die, just as they begin to understand.
