SLCLS Genre Study discussion

Welcome to the SLCLS Genre Study Goodreads group!

I'm the moderator for this group (which pretty much only means that I'm able to delete stuff). I am the manager at the Kearns Library, but I've worked at Whitmore, Sandy, and Riverton.

I read all kinds of stuff, and you are welcome to friend me if you want to see what I like. Right at this moment, I'm into literary fiction, but who knows what I will like next week? What about you? Let us know where you work and what you like to read, and anything else you want to share.

Also, please take the time to upload a profile picture- even if you use your cat, like me! Mine is Gracie by the way, and she's something of a serial killer, so she fits right in with mysteries.

Thanks for setting this up! I'm excited to chat about mysteries, and learn other folks' favorite titles.

I am the assistant manager at the West Jordan Library, and I like to read romances of all kind, including romantic suspense, paranormal, historical and science fiction/fantasy. I run the adult book group here, so I do get to read all kinds of things, including mysteries.

I used to be a much more active Goodreads user, keeping track of all the children's books I read. Now I only check in occasionally.

I enjoyed the workshop last Thursday and decided to join. I am a library assistant at the Metro Jail/Oxbow Libraries and I enjoy mysteries as well as fantasy and science fiction. I have wanted to branch out and try some new authors in this genre so this gives me a great opportunity to do that along with chatting with others.

This is Stephanie, ys librarian at West Valley Library. I haven't taken the Mystery workshop, but a little genre discussion is always good! I actually like mysteries and read a lot of them, but nothing too hard-boiled.

Hi, I'm Ruby Cheesman, library manager at Bingham Creek. I love Mysteries of all kinds: police procedurals, cozies, even serial killer ones! My favorite sub-genre right now is the Scandinavian mysteries, which I like to call "Ice Cold" thrillers.

Hi! I'm Michelle. I'm new the Salt Lake County and am one of the two library assistants at the South Main Clinic. I mostly read middle grade literature. I love fantasy, but I am feeling a little worn out by it now. So, this group has come at the perfect time.

I don't read too many mysteries, but I always enjoy the ones I do so I am excited to find some new books to read.

Hi, I’m Ann Marie, a Children’s Librarian at the Magna Library. I read all over the place, but particularly enjoy fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, and historical fiction with a light twist of romance. Of course, adding an occasional mystery to my reading list is always a welcome change of pace—in fact, the book I’m reading right now is a mystery.

Hi, I'm Leslie, the manager at Herriman. I read and enjoy a variety of stuff, and I do enjoy mysteries. Right now I'm working my way through the Joanna Brady series, by J.A. Jance.

I'm Heather, a shelver at Bingham Creek. I didn't usually read mysteries, but I got sucked in to Lee Child's Jack Reacher series when my dad and I read Killing Floor together. But I am reading faster than Lee publishes, so I'm looking forward to finding new mystery authors to fill the spot. Because of this group, I've learned about "sub-genres" and am excited for police procedurals.

I'm Jamie- a YS (teen) Librarian at Magna. I took this training today and found it to be very informative. I am not a particular fan of mysteries but I did get a good recommendation from Daniel. I think I will try to read a "classic" mystery, ie Agatha Christie. Does anyone have a recommendation for a realistic mystery? I suppose by that I mean something in the vein of "In Cold Blood" which is true crime. I would prefer it to be a mystery fiction book however. Anyway I look forward to learning more about the genres throughout 2013.

Hello - I'm Telesa, a YS Librarian at Riverton library. I am not a huge fan of mysteries - unless it has a teen protagonist, so I am looking forward to recommendations from the group. The last mystery I read and enjoyed was the _Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie_.

Try No Night is Too Long by Barbara Vine. The main character is named Tim.

I'm Tim, a Library Assistant at Smith Library. I know the classic British detectives pretty well, as Mystery on PBS was something of a weekly ritual in my home growing up, but I don't read a huge amount of mystery fiction.

The last five mystery novels I read were:


Those five books account for about 15% of what I read over the period in which I read them.

I am Naomi, a CSS at Riverton. I don't read too many mysteries, but read all genres. Like Heather, I've read some Jack Reacher mysteries and am looking forward to the Jack Reacher movie coming out.

Hi, I'm Lora, children's librarian at MCC. I don't really read mysteries much, so I'm thinking this group can help my reader's advisory skills in the area. I've had pretty good luck using novelist to help people find mysteries they've enjoyed. Ocasionally though, you get the mystery lover who has read everything. I notice there are a number of youth services librarians on this list - maybe we need a subgenre folder for kids books?

Are you!? I'm bummed because I'm not much of a Tom Cruise fan, and because the physical presence of Jack is such a distinct trait and Tom cannot possibly measure up. But, of course, I will still go see it, and will probably enjoy it.

Hey guys! My name is Allison Madsen, I am a Youth Services Librarian at SJO. I like mysteries but usually tend to read YA and JF. I too love Masterpiece Mystery!!

I'm Kiku, a public services librarian at South Jordan. I usually read mysteries and historical fiction. The best books I've read this year (that I remember) are the Butterfly Cabinet, Doc, and the Lacuna.

I'm Cherie Bitter, a public services librarian at Bingham Creek. My favorite mysteries are historical because I'm usually learning something as well as solving a mystery. I just finished reading City of Saints and liked it a lot.

Hi! I am Angie. I am a sub for SL County. I love reading mysteries and prefer the more literary or historical ones. I do read quite of bit of YA/JF books, but mysteries are my favorite adult genre.

Read "The Agency" novels by Lee. They are historical fiction mysteries. Kiku

I just finished Desert Heat and it was a fun fast read.

I'm Suzanne Heaton YS Librarian at Sandy. I love mysteries and sometimes find it difficult to read anything else. I love British mysteries especially. Is anyone else a Patricia Wentworth fan?

Hi! I'm Danette and I love most mysteries--cozies not so much. I just finished the entire Jack Reacher series by Lee Child and loved it. I saw the movie too, but couldn't really buy into Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. I'm joining the discussion a little late because of the holiday craziness. I will try to catch up!

Hi I'm Trish the manager at Magna. I love to read all genres and have enjoyed mysteries in the past. I have been reading other stuff but am glad to get some new mystery titles and see where the genre has gone. We were trying to think of a craft that doesn't have a series. Maybe macrame? (Ann Barrett's suggestion)

Hello, I'm Virginia Whiting and I work at Herriman. I've always enjoyed the element of mystery, but I'm pretty picky about reading the genre. I prefer historical over contemporary mysteries and being a children's librarian tend to read more JF and YF than adult. Consequently, when I get the chance to read adult, in any genre, it had better be good or I won't waste my time with it. I'm hoping this group will introduce me to some good mysteries.

Hi, I'm De, a library assistant at Taylorsville. I read a lot. I enjoy science fiction; fantasy- epic and urban; mysteries of all types; historical fiction, especially medieval mysteries; some biographies, few romance and some general fiction. I think these genre studies are going to be a lot of fun.
